[edit] Summary

This is a side-by-side comparison of Francisco de Goya's painting Saturn Devouring his Son (left) and Dave Brown's cartoon showing Ariel Sharon eating a baby (right). Goya's painting is in the public domain due to age; Brown's cartoon is copyrighted. This image is intended for use in the Blood libel article, and is believed to be fair use because:

  • The cartoon was distributed as part of a larger work (an editorial page) and therefore the portion of copyrighted material being used is small;
  • The resolution is low enough that the image cannot be used to produce high-quality printed bootlegs of the cartoon;
  • Since Dave Brown has defended his work against charges of antisemitism by claiming it was based on Goya's painting, a side-by-side comparison of the two is essential to judge the similarities or lack thereof, and this legitimate analysis and/or criticism is not possible without reproducing the copyrighted cartoon.
