India has a multi-party system with a predominance of small regional parties. Parties that wish to contest local, state or national elections are required to be registered by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Six parties are recognised as national parties. They are sorted into the name, acronym, year of formation and the party leader.

The complete list of Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu consists of the heads of government in the history of the state of Tamil Nadu in India since 1920. The area under the present-day state of Tamil Nadu has been part of different territorial configurations under Madras Presidency and Madras State in its history.
