The Governor General's Northern Medal was created by Adrienne Clarkson on September 15, 2005 to provide awards to those whom serve with distinction in Canada's north.
The medal was designed by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin and the design consist of:
- snowy owl - guardian spirit
- aurora borealis - scope of the North
- Canadian Arctic Diamond - the North Star

- Sheila Watt-Cloutier 2005 - As chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, Watt-Cloutier was dedicated to create attention to the problems of global warming and the Arctic
