The Goulburn Valley Highway / Freeway (//) is a highway located in Victoria, Australia. The section north beyond the Hume Freeway is part of the Melbourne to Brisbane National Highway (together with Hume Freeway) and is the main link between these two cities as well as a major link between Victoria and inland New South Wales. The highway roughly follows the course of the Goulburn River, a tributary of the Murray River. The Highway serves the fruit and vegetable growing areas of the Goulburn Valley in Victoria, one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions. The highway runs from Elidon to Tocumwal and then crosses the Murray River to join Newell Highway in NSW.

- 2 lane single carrageway with tactile road lines, wide shoulders and small sections of 3 or 4 lane single carrageway road for overtaking.

  • Between 5 km south of Nagambie and the Wahring Roadhouse
  • Between Murchison to Violet Town Road and the Murray River

The highway crosses the Victoria/New South Wales border at the Murray River and continues north through New South Wales as the Newell Highway.

[edit] Speed limit

Excluding stretches of highway through towns, the highway sections have a speed limit of 100 km/h while freeway sections have a limit of 110 km/h.

[edit] Future development

The Goulburn Valley Highway is defined as a Road of National Importance (RONI) which means the Australian Government fully funds improvements to it. It is progressively being upgraded to freeway standard and will ultimately bypass all towns between the junction with the Hume Freeway and the New South Wales border.

[edit] Arcadia duplication

Work commenced on the 11 kilometre duplication of the Arcadia section in July 2006 and is now open to traffic.

[edit] Nagambie bypass

A decision on the Nagambie bypass alignment will be made in late 2006. A program for construction of the Nagambie Bypass has not been agreed on.

[edit] Shepparton bypass

An alignment for the Shepparton bypass has been decided. The bypass will cross the Goulburn River at Toolamba and travel west of Mooroopna rejoining the existing highway north of Congupna.

A program for construction has not been agreed on.

[edit] Strathmerton deviation

This realignment will bypass the small townships of Strathmerton and Yarroweyah and avoid dangerous bends south of the Murray River crossing at Tocumwal.

This project is not scheduled for several years.
