• In olden days before the arrival of Brahmins, the Edigas were warriors and enjoyed great respect and dominant position in the society.
• According to Gowd legend, they originated from Sage Kaundinya, who they believe originally invented toddy tapping. They believe that many kings came from their community including the Chalukya, and Satavahana kings.
• Alcohol( Madhu or sura drink or Nectar is first given to Demi Gods by Lord Vishnu in Mohini Avatar along with Kalpavriksha (present day coconut tree or palm tree). These trees may be 60 million years old. The timing also coincides with the timing of kurma avatar. Lord Vishnu is also called as Madhu or Madhusudhan.
• The Setti Balija’s and Sri Sayana’s original name was Goud. Their surnames Gudala,Gubbala, Geddada, Gouthu suggests that their original name was Goud - these adaptations first became known in the 18th and 19th centuries^{[citation needed]}. According to legend, a Sri Dommeti Venkat Garu (A Goud), had a chief-like status and changed the community name to Setti Balija. Sri Dommeti Venkat Garu lived in the Bodasakurru village near Kakinada of East Godavari Dt.
• Gouds use the name "Prasad" to represent their affinity for cultivating coconut fields and banana fields.The following surnames suggest that gouds mostly depend on tree products like

Talla, thati( palm tree ), nara,narikel,naragani(coconut),chintal,chintalapati( tamarind), mamidla,mamidisetti( Mango ),panasa,arati( banana) etc. some surnames like annam ( Rice ), cheruku( sugarcane)suggest their modern cultivation.

• Kerala was considered be the origin of the Goud or Ezhava community as early as Ramayana and Mahabharata times. In those days, the main diet consisted of liquor (toddy, fruit juices), fruits, milk and meat. Large-scale land cultivation was rare - very few people were farmers.
• Liquor (Amrutham) is considered a life-saving food, giving energy and saving people from tremendous pains. The living conditions of people were very poor; when bitten by insects and snakes, the Gouds would resort to liquor. It used to act as a medicine as well as an anaesthetic. During the last 300 years toddy or liquor has come to be considered unhealthy, and so the development of people supporting themselves by the production of Toddy has also stopped.
• Present research on Alcohol consumption has made public about the following facts.

• Alcoholic beverages tend to stimulate your appetite. • Wine consists of smaller quantities of phytochemicals that tend to reduce your chances of developing heart disease and certain cancers. Moderate drinkers may have a lower risk of diabetes than non-drinkers. Research finds an association between better cognition or thinking ability and moderate drinking. • Genes play a major role in deciding as to how your body will process alcohol. • Keep a check on the eatables that you consume while boozing, because that can lead to weight gain. • Excess of anything is bad, so drink in limited quantities then be it beer, wine or spirits. Excessive drinking can cause hangover, leading to problems like nausea, vomit etc.

• Gouds are found all over Andhra Pradesh, but large concentrations can be found in East Godavari, West Godavari, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Medak, Krishna district, and Warangal districts.
• They are the most populous backward caste in Nizamabad, East Godavari, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal, Krishna, Prakasham, Nellore, Anantapur, West Godavari, Medak, RR, Mahbubnagar and Hyderabad districts.
• In Nalgonda, Medak, Kurnool and Mahbubnagar they have economic and political status similar to the Reddy caste. In Godavari districts, they are the most populous caste and have equal political status as the Kapu Caste.
• In Maharashtra, they are settled in Nanded, Latur region of Marathwada, and Chandrapur of Vidharba and Konkan region. Though popualtion of this caste is small in Marathwada and Vidharbha and are known as 'Kalal/Goud Kalal'. There are large population in Konkan region and known as 'Bhandari'
• In Telangana the largest castes population are Yadavs, Gouds, Mudiraju, Padmashali, and Munnuru Kapus.

Goud surnames will have the following suffixes:

• Setti or setty - Visakapatnam, Godavari, Khammam and Krishna districts.
  • ex - Medisetti, Vasamsetti, Koppisetti, Mamidisetti, Anagani, Polagani, Bonagani etc
• Gani or gany - Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore,Telangana
  • Alegani, Byragoni, Balagouni, Balagowni,Deshagouni,Deshagowni,Balagoni etc
• Some Goud names include god-like names: Madhusudan, Madhu, Suresh, Soma, Gouri, Somanath.

Politically Gouds are equal to Munnuru Kapus and Padmashalis in North Telengana, and to Mudiraju and Yadavs castes in South Telangana.

It comes under BC-B section 4, the following castes are considered as Goud community under AP BC act. List of B.Cs and categorization (As per G.O.Ms. No. 1793 Education Dept., Dt : 23.9.1970 as modified from time to time).

There are other communities which have a similar name to the Goud, but they do not belong to the Goud community. They are:

• Gandla (Oil pressing)
• Goondla (Fisher man)
• Gavara
• Godaba
• Settibalija (Kapu) of Rayalaseema district is Forward caste.

The political parties like TDP & Loksatta are strongly advertising against consumption of alcohol by lower income groups. They are against cheap liquor. Accoriding to real statistics , the expenses of lower income people are Per Year expenses

1. Liquor 500 crores 2. Cinemas 1000 crores 3. TV 500 crores 4. Tourism 1000 crores 5. Medical expenses by Government & . Personnel medical expenses 10000 crores 6. Productivity Loss because of ill health > 50,000 cores

If government suddenly stops liquor, the expenses in items 5 & 6 will increase at least by 40 %. The people start increasing their expenses more on 3,4 and other items, instead of saving them. These parties should think of stopping cheap liquor and supplying Beer and other health products through ration shops (may be 8 beer bottles per month) which amounts mere 5,000 crores on Government. This will result in at least a 40 % reduction in expenses on items 5 & 6.''''''

[edit] Traditional occupations

The Gouds originally prospered around the Godavari River. Their way of life depending on products of palm trees (Toddy) is derived from Kerala. The Goud community adopted toddy tapping as their trade. The trade is believed to be a gift from God. The people who serve toddy are considered God-like (Somanath, Madhusudhana, and Gandharvas).

Modern Gouds support themselves in farming and business. A substantial body of educated Gouds constitute captains of the Information Technology enterprises and have established India's largest software outfits like Infosys and HCL technologies.In Telangana, Gouds are mainly found in the brewing industry.

The system of assigning specific vocations to castes has yielded the following:

The above communities were all same who live in villages and towns. Over the time period, the communities were separated based on the trade they follow. Over the time, the communities might have been further sub-divided into Viswa Brahmin, Nai Brahmin, Goud Brahmin , Raju Brahmin, Nadar Brahmin and Yadava Brahmin to perform religious duties of a particular caste as a brahmin.These communities existed over lakhs of years still not known.

Some communities like Reddy, Kamma, Kapu, Velama, Balija, Telaga, Ontari etc. gave up their traditional occupation of producing food products and they became agricultural land owners and local leaders. They are non-trading in nature and have emerged in the last 2000 years.
