Gothoskar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gothoskar is the surname of people hailing from the Village of Gothos in Sindhudurg District of Maharashtra State in Western India. There are two families having the same surname but they are not related to each other.

Orkut has a community called "The Gothoskars" that helps all the Gothoskars around the globe to come together.

The first family is Gothoskar-Rajyadhyaksha. They belong to the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin Community and are originally from Pilgaon in Dicholi Taluka of Goa. They shifted to the Gothos Village sometime in the 17th Century during the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa. The Village of Gothos was presented as Inam (Kind of Zamindari) to the Family by the Raja of Sawantwadi. In the 19th Century, a part of the family separated out. The two houses "Varcha Ghar" and "Khalcha Ghar" are separated by a road.

The other family is Gothoskar-Thakur and belongs to the Karhade Brahmin Community. They are the priestly class and manage the temple rituals in the village. Umpire Madhav Gothoskar belongs to this family.
