Soon, Gorō was chosen to be part of one of the most famous groups in Japan, SMAP. The band proved to be popular in Japanese entertainment and Gorō became a star. His first movie was in 1990 with Saraba itoshino yakuza. In 1993, Gorō got his first taste of international films when he was chosen as the male lead in the romantic comedy Private Lessons II as a Japanese student who falls for his tutor. The film also had SMAP leader Masahiro Nakai. In 1994, Gorō appeared with fellow SMAP member Takuya Kimura in Shoot.
