Gorkys Hernandez

Gorkys Hernandez (born September 7, 1987 in Guiria, Venezuela) is an Venezuelan professional minor league baseball player.[1] Hernandez is an outfielder for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Atlanta Braves minor league Advanced A team. [2]

Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers on April 30, 2005, at the age of 17. He made his professional baseball debut in 2006 for the Tigers Rookie Level affiliate, the Gulf Coast Tigers. He appeared in 50 games, hitting .327 with 5 home runs and 23 RBIs, to go along with 20 steals. The next year, Hernandez was promoted to the Single A West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League. In 2007, Hernandez stole 54 bases, and was recognized as having the best speed in the Tigers organization.

On November 16, 2007 he and pitcher Jair Jurrjens were traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Braves for shortstop Edgar Renteria[3] Entering the 2008 season, Hernandez was ranked as the 5th best prospect in the Braves organization.[4] As of May 6, 2008, Hernandez is batting .309 with two home runs and 11 RBI.[5]
