[edit] Background and History
Gorey Community School was established in 1993, following the amalgamation of the Loreto, Vocational and CBS schools.
It now has a student population of almost 1700 and a teaching staff of more than 150.
The school occupies a large site which comprises playing fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. In 2000 a new extension was opened. There are now over 80 classrooms including numerous specialist rooms and a large gymnasium. A second extension is also planned, with construction expected to begin in September 2007.
GCS is managed by a Board of Management, which includes 6 representatives from the trustees ( the V.E.C., the Loreto order and the C.B.S), 2 teachers representatives and 2 parents representatives)
[edit] Overcrowding
Gorey town has experienced enormous growth in recent years causing overcrowding in the school. Gorey Community School was originally conceived to cater for a maximum of 500 students because of the fast growth of the town it now has almost 2000 students.
A new secondary school for the town has been promised by Mary Hanafin, Minister for Education, which may ease the pressure on Gorey Community School. However where to locate this school has caused considerable debate.
