From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation seeks to develop outcome-based projects that will improve the quality of life for future generations. The foundation focuses upon portfolios of large-scale initiatives and encourages collaboration so as to achieve the most significant and enduring outcomes possible. The foundation is established by Gordon E. Moore and his wife Betty I. Moore.

Funding is concentrated on: environmental conservation, science, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

On 29 July 2007, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation committed $100 million to launch a nursing school at the University of California, Davis.

In Spring, 2008, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation awarded a $4.8 million grant to the University of California, Santa Cruz, to fund ongoing research in marine microbiology. The five-year grant supports a UCSC research program called MEGAMER (Microbial Environmental Genomics Applications: Modeling, Experimentation, and Remote sensing), established in July 2005 with a $2.2 million award from the Moore Foundation. Jonathan Zehr, professor of ocean sciences and principal investigator on the new grant, oversaw the establishment of MEGAMER.
