Gordon D. Fox is a Rhode Island politician, currently serving as Majority Leader of the State House of Representatives.
A Democrat, he represents the 4th District in the House, containing parts of Providence. He was first elected a state representative in November 1992 and has served as Majority Leader since late 2002.[1] He was re-elected — both as a state representative and as Majority Leader — in November 2006. A former chairman of the House Finance Committee, he has publicly stated his ambition to succeed Bill Murphy as Speaker of the House.[2] He has also been mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed David Cicilline as mayor of Providence.[2]
An attorney, he is a graduate of Providence College, Rhode Island College, and Northeastern Law School, where he paid his way by working at a Carvel ice cream shop.[2]
His mother is Cape Verdean and Fox considers himself mixed-race.[3] Having come out publicly in 2004, he is one of two openly gay members of the Rhode Island General Assembly, alongside Rep. Frank Ferri (D-Warwick).
