Gonzalo Rubén Bergessio (born July 20, 1984, in Córdoba) is an Argentine football striker. He currently plays for San Lorenzo of the Argentine Primera.
Bergessio started his career in the lower leagues with Club Atlético Platense between 2001 and 2005.
In 2005 Bergessio was signed by Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba of the Primera Division, but at the end of the 2005-2006 season Instituto were relegated and Bergessio was sold to Racing Club. During the Apertura 2006 Bergessio chipped in with a useful six goals, and in the Clausura 2007 he has maintained his ability to score goals on a fairly regular basis. His fast pace earned him a big following at the Estadio Juan Domingo Perón and he became a fan favourite after scoring the game winner against giants Boca Juniors, adding another winner against River Plate.
Bergessio signed a five-year €2.5m deal with the Portuguese giants Benfica on June 26th, 2007[1].
In 2008 he returned to Argentina to play with San Lorenzo. On May 8, 2008 he was involved in the Copa Libertadores game against River Plate. After San Lorenzo had two players sent off and were 2-0 down, he scored twice to give his team a famous victory.[2]
