Coordinates: 27°08′N 81°56′E / 27.13, 81.93 Gonda is a city and a municipal board in Gonda district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

It is situated 125 km north east of the state capital of Lucknow.
The district lies between 26º 47' and 27º- 20' north latitude and 81º 30' and 82º 46' east longitude
The territory covered by the present district of Gonda formed part of the ancient kingdom of Kosala . After the death of Rama, the celebrated sovereign of the Solar line of kings who ruled the kingdom of Kosala, it was divided into two portion the northern and southern - river Ghaghara forming the boundary between the two. Gonda falls in the northern part with Ghaghara bordering the district's entire southern boundary.

The main occupation of the people in the district is farming. Agricultural produce include wheat, paddy, different pulses, oilseeds and sugarcane. Mango and Guava orchards can also be found in abundance. Through the district, pass the holy rivers Saryu and Ghaghra. There are many religious places in the district and the district headquarter itself is very close (60 km) to holy city Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Rama. It is birth place of great poet Tulsi Das who wrote epic Ramcharitamans, depicting life and virtues of Lord Rama.

There is also a Gonda Island in the Mediterranean Sea and a Gonda farm in Hannahstown, Pennsylvania. Gonda's great thinker is ghagh and adam gondvi... The Gonda is also home town of Dr. Farhan Pasha who was scientist in Korea and now in France.

As of 2001 India census[2], Gonda had a population of 122,164. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Gonda has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 60%. In Gonda, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
