Golobulus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Golobulus is a fictional character; the leader of Cobra-La in the G. I. Joe universe.

[edit] Animated series

In the original animated continuity he only appeared in G.I. Joe: The Movie, and was voiced by Burgess Meredith. Golobulus was the original founder of the Cobra Organization, in essence. He chose a citizen of Cobra-La to go out into the world and cause devastation in his name, this citizen would later become Cobra Commander. When Cobra Commander returned, a failure, Golobulus ordered him to be exposed to a special mutating spore which devolved him into a large snake. Golobulus also created the Cobra emperor, Serpentor, by implanting a mind manipulation device into Dr. Mindbender. Golobulus' plan is to use organic pods of Cobra-La that he sent into space to destroy humanity. When the pods mature, they will spread spores onto the Earth that will de-evolve all of the planet, except Cobra-La, into their most primitive forms. During the G.I.Joe's attack on Cobra-La, Golobulus is wounded in the eye by Lieutenant Falcon during their final struggle, and the injured Golobulus is seen escaping right before Cobra-La collapses. It is never made clear if he survived or died in the collapse of Cobra-La.

Although he never appeared in the comics, G.I. Joe comic book writer Larry Hama revealed his final fate on a trading card. Golobulus perished in an avalanche in the Arctic. No further mention is made of Cobra-la or even referenced in the original comic series.

Golobulus appears as a large humanoid with a snake's body in place of legs. His primary form of transport, a large, organic pod with several tendrils, hid his lower body most of the time. During the final battle he abandoned the pod briefly to make full use of his lower body during combat.

[edit] Devil's Due Publishing

Golobulus made his first comics appearance in the fourth G.I Joe vs the Transformers series from Devil's Due Publishing, again as leader of Cobra-La. He did not differ much from his animated counterpart. After summoning the Dark God Unicron to cleanse Earth for them, Golobulus intended to sacrifice Firewall to celebrate Unicron's coming. However, the ceremony was interrupted by Joe Colton (the original G.I Joe), Hawk and Autobot leader Optimus Prime. Golobulus attacked Hawk as he attempted to free Firewall. Ranting about how he intended to destroy the mechanical Transformers, he was then crushed by Prime's fist.

[edit] Other Media

Golobulus also appeared as one of the "bosses" in the G.I. Joe video game by Taxan for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
