The Goldman School of Dental Medicine is the dental school of Boston University. Its curriculum is noted for the APEX program (Professional Applied Experience) providing students with practical experience at a dental practice as part of its clinical training. The dental school has about 100 students per class.
The school can trace its origins to 1958 when the Boston University Medical School started a "Department of Stomatology (medical study of the physiology and pathology of the mouth) to provide postdoctoral education in dentistry. At that time, the institution was the only one in the country devoted solely to specialty education in dentistry." [6] In 1963 it became a free standing School of Dentistry under Dean Henry M. Goldman. In 1972, it instituted a predoctoral program. In 1996 the school had outgrown its designation as a school of graduate dentistry and accordingly was renamed the "Boston University School of Dental Medicine". [6] Dean Spencer N. Frankl has served in that position since 1977.
Its departments include the following:
- Diagnostic Sciences and Patient Services
- General Dentistry
- Endodontics
- Health Policy and Health Services
- Research
- Molecular and Cell Biology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Periodontology and Oral Biology
- Restorative Sciences/Biomaterials
