The Golden Highway is an Ontario Tourist Route that travels through Northern Ontario and the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region in Quebec, from Timmins, Ontario to Val-d'Or, Quebec.
The route starts in Timmins along Highway 101, and heads east to Highway 11 in Matheson. It heads south on Highway 11 to Kenogami Lake, before heading east towards Kirkland Lake, Ontario and the Quebec boundary along Highway 66.
The Golden Highway continues in Quebec as Route 117 through the city of Rouyn-Noranda before terminating in Val-d'Or.
The tourist route also has a branch leading west of Highway 11 along Highway 66 from Kenogami Lake to Matachewan, thus following Highway 66 for its entire length.
The route is named for all the gold mining that occurs in the area, and for apocryphal rumours that gold was accidentally crushed, ground, and mixed into the gravel during the paving of Highway 66; however, this is just speculation and urban legend at best.
