NAPLES DAILY NEWS ARTICLE Despite a winning track season in 2006, Golden Gate High School opened its 2007 season without former head track coach Drew Hamernik.
According to Hamernik, the change did not come at his request, but stemmed from a disagreement with school officials over issues with other coaches.
Hamernik and his wife, Linda, served as cross country and track coaches at Golden Gate since the school opened in 2004-05. Linda Hamernik continues to coach girls track and cross country.
Drew Hamernik was released from his coaching duties, last spring. After a series of hearings with teacher union officials and then-Golden Gate Principal Robert Spano, he was allowed to retain his position as cross country coach, but not track.
“I got to do cross country, but it suffered because we didn’t get to do summer practices and I didn’t have the chance to talk to kids in the halls and stuff,” he says. “We had pretty low numbers – I usually have over 40 kids out, but we still accomplished some things.”
Spano, and Athletic Director Pete Seitz, declined to comment on the matter, stating coaching contracts are renewed on a year-by-year basis.
Hamernik is supportive of new head coach Steve Thompson, who served as assistant coach last season, but would still like to be involved in track. He says his offer to volunteer his time to the program was declined. Despite the loss of the position, he says the students still recognize him as coach.
“Day after day I am talking to people about track, and they’re kids that I don’t even know that are talking to me about it,” he says. “I put my heart and soul into that program.”
This season, Thomson will take over as the track coach. Thomson has been a volunteer and assistant coach with the team in the past, but it will be tough to match the Hamerniks’ coaching record last season of 80 wins for the boys’ team, and 109 wins for the girls.
Hamernik said that the process of all of this has taken a toll on him at school. He remains supportive of Thomson, even though Hamernik wishes he was still in charge of Titan runners.
“Steve has been helpful. He would help with meets and has been good to the program over the years,” Hamernik said.
Spano has since moved on from Golden Gate and has taken the principal role at a developing elementary school. Hamernik isn’t sure what his future will hold.
