[edit] Qualifying
Juan Pablo Montoya created a major surprise in qualifying by taking taking his second career pole as well as ending the pole streak of the two Ferraris. The first of them was Michael Schumacher in second, but Ralf Schumacher in the second Williams seperated him from Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard was fifth in the first of the McLarens and was not too happy, but atleast he was better then Mika Häkkinen who crashed on his first run and would start 22nd and last. This left the door open for Jarno Trulli to take sixth after doing a good job to beat Heinz-Harald Frentzen with Jacques Villeneuve in eighth.
[edit] Race
At the start, polesitter Juan Pablo Montoya was swamped by Michael Schumacher before the run to Copse, and then passed by Rubens Barrichello (who had already got ahead of Ralf Schumacher) on the Hangar straight. Behind, Jarno Trulli touched title contender David Coulthard and went wide and was forced to drop a place to Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Schumacher was leading Barrichello, Montoya, Ralf, Coulthard, Frentzen, Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve. And then, on the third lap, Coulthard's suspension failed as a result of his earlier contact with Trulli, putting him out. The top 4 stayed together. On lap 16, it began to rain and Ralf went in for refuelling and also changed to wet tyres. However, the rain stopped, and he had o pit for dries two laps later, and rejoined well down the order. The conditions changed again with Montoya changing to wets during his refuelling stop on lap 20. This was too early and the two Ferraris stopped at the right time, and rejoined 6 seconds ahead of Montoya.
Barrichello made a mistake on lap 25 and lost 2.8 seconds and after that, the conditions began worse, but still the top three battled it out at a stabilized pace, Schumacher 2.8 seconds ahead of Barrichello and 6.2 seconds ahead of Montoya. On lap 40, Schumacher and Montoya went in for their second refeulling stop. Schumacher went out as usual but something was wrong with Montoya's car and Montoya stalled. This causes a chain of events and as the team tried to repair, a major flash fire broke out. It was extinguished, but Montoya had dropped to the back. After more repairs, he rejoined 10 laps down. Meanwhile, at the front, there was no change in gap between Schumacher and Barrichello, still remaining at 2.8 seconds but the action was provided by the recovering Ralf, as he passed Giancarlo Fisichella for seventh. Schumacher won with Barrichello making it a Ferrari 1-2 ahead of Frentzen, Kimi Räikkönen, Villeneuve, Pedro de la Rosa, Ralf and Fisichella.

[edit] Notes
- As usual, this race and the preceding French Grand Prix were run without any tobacco sponsorship except for the Ferrari team which ran its usual sponsorship.
- The McLaren team put their drivers names, "Mika" and "David" on their cars.
- The Benetton team did the same thing, with "Fisico" and "Jenson".
- The Jordan team put "Bitten Heroes" on their race cars
- Juan Pablo Montoya was third and running at the pace of the leaders but something ignited on his car in the second round of stops. After lengthy repairs, he rejoined the race, 10 laps down.
- At the start, Jarno Trulli's Jordan collided with David Coulthard's McLaren in the first corner. This led to Coulthard's suspension faling on the third lap, putting him out.
- Pedro de la Rosa's Jaguar-Cosworth pushed his teammate Eddie Irvine off the track at the start. Irvine retired from the race immediately.
