Goblins are one of the Eight Fairy Families in the Artemis Fowl series. They are reptilian creatures with a tendency to lick their own eyeballs, as they have no eyelids. They can also conjure fire, which is described as an evolutionary joke: (quote Foaly the Centaur) "Goblins. Evolution's little joke. Pick the dumbest creatures on the planet and give them the ability to conjure fire." They are very stupid, with an IQ not much higher than that of trolls or stinkworms. A goblin's skin is completely fireproof, although Mulch Diggums manages to burn one ("Wart-face") by plugging up his nostrils and letting the fire scorch his insides. They are most prominent in the series in the goblin rebellion featured in Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident and are often criminals. Goblin skin ranges from green to red to brown. Former Captain Holly Short managed to stop them from setting a large portion of Haven on fire by (easily) outwitting them using a fire extinguisher and permanently removing those particulars' ability to conjure fire. Their skin also sheds, like any other reptilian creature. If done correctly, they can take their skin off in one piece and be used as a disguise as shown in The Opal Deception.
