Gobabeb

Gobabeb is a desert research station in the Namib Desert in Namibia. The station is approximately 53 miles (85 km) SE of Walvis Bay and 145 miles (232 km) SW of Windhoek. It is located at the northern bank of the Kuiseb River, an ephemeral River which runs through the Namib-Naukluft National Park to Walvis Bay.

Gobabeb was founded in 1962 as Namib Desert Research Station. Dr. Koch became its first director. In 1965 the DERU (Desert Ecological Research Unit) was founded as a result of a partnership with the South African CSIR. In 1967 Dr. Mary Seely started as a researcher at the station. After Dr. Koch died in 1970 Dr. Seely became director of the station.
