Go to work on an egg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Go to work on an egg" was an advertising slogan used by the United Kingdom's Egg Marketing Board during the 1950s as part of more than £12 million it spent on advertising. The proposition was that having an egg for breakfast was the best way to start the working day.

The slogan is often said to have been created by Fay Weldon, who has since said that she was just the manager of the person who created the phrase.

It is now 50 years since the ad was first run. There has been controversy since reruns of the TV commercial, starring the comedian Tony Hancock and actress Patricia Hayes, have been banned by the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre which defended its decision, insisting that the adverts did not suggest a varied diet. The advert has been made available on an anniversary website instead.
