[edit] Song Information

Released on July 21, 1998, it was the fourth single from Jackson's sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope (1997). The song was written by Janet Jackson, James Harris III, Terry Lewis and René Elizondo, Jr. and was released in July and Setember 1998 in the U.K. and U.S. respectively. Jackson was asked to perform at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards. She accepted the invitation, and was set to perform "Go Deep", in order to boost its radio plays. However she performed "What About" instead, fuelling rumours that "What About" was going to be the next single from the album. Jackson responded with a comment on the situation replying that she "decided to do something different for the Awards Show...".

[edit] Chart performance

The song was released as an international single. It received radio airplay in the U.S. and had success as a dance single, peaking at #1 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. The song peaked in the top forty in most European countries and Australia, but was a bigger success in the U.S. and Canada. A hip hop remix by producer Timbaland also contributed to the song's success at urban radio in the U.S.

[edit] Music video

The video (directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and released in July 1998) features a teen boy (played by Eric "Ty" Hodges). The boy's parents have left town for the weekend and the doorbell rings and Janet and her dancers asked to be let in. Jackson and company invite more friends over and a large house party ensues. The video climaxes with the young boy realizing it was all an elaborate daydream featuring his favorite singer. The video is featured on the 2001 limited bonus-DVD edition of "All For You" as well as the 2004 video compilation "From janet. to Damita Jo: The Videos".
