Removed the DE category. To my understanding it is not - doesn't it use WindowMaker? Dysprosia 22:46, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)
GNUstep is a desktop environment, WindowMaker isn't, it is a window manager. The WindowMaker page says Window Maker was written primarily by Alfredo Kojima (lead developer since 1997) and released under the GNU GPL, with the intent to integrate into the GNUstep desktop environment. - Well, I think my memory of what GNUstep was, was out of date - they seem to have got a lot of stuff done! They seem to provide a lot of DE-ish stuff, so I'll replace the link Dysprosia
[edit] GNU relation
Does this project have any relation to the GNU project aside from the clever name and use of the GPL? --Gwern (contribs) 23:02, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
I believe at one point it was slated to be the GNU desktop, but kind of got left behind because of the progress of KDE. GNOME was developed initially as a response to KDE, and the rest is history. Squiggleslash 22:48, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] HippoDraw
The article says HippoDraw provided the impetus to create GNUstep, but HippoDraw is “written in C++, with user interaction via a Qt-based GUI and a Python scriptable interface.” There is nothing to contradict this on the HippoDraw web site. At first I thought it was a different HippoDraw, but the author is the same. What gives? -Ahruman 09:39, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
