GNU/DOS

GNU/DOS was a distribution of FreeDOS that was discontinued on November 28, 2006 due to lack of developer time for the project, inability to meet the project's objectives, and superiority of the stable version of FreeDOS when combined with the official releases of the DJGPP development tools. The stable version 1.0 of FreeDOS, which had been released in 2006, contains many of the additional applications included with GNU/DOS and listed below.

GNU/DOS included the following:
- Several core FreeDOS packages
- The DJGPP development environment with many GNU programs
- The GNU Compiler Collection
- The Arachne Web browser, e-mail client, and file manager
- The OpenGEM graphical user interface with many GEM programs
- The Vim editor for software developers
- GPL, GPL with DJGPP exceptions, LGPL and Public domain licensed source code for all of the above

GNU/DOS was well suited for:
- Web and e-mail (no Java or other plugins) through a dial-up modem (not a Winmodem) or Ethernet connection
- Classic DOS and Unix command line applications and games
- Software development
