Marriage

Hullo. Passions over at Talk:Marriage have died down, and editors have worked out what I think is a pretty good NPOV lead definitional paragraph. Another admin is requesting immediate changes to the protected article, so I think the simplest thing would be unprotecting so that we can insert the new paragraph. Quick one before bed - could you have a look at the above article? I'm aiming for B-class with it for now, so anything you think would be needed to get it there would be appreciated. Thanks :) Orderinchaos78 14:13, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Aquinas & Related Articles

I hear what you are saying with the AC daughter articles, i do personally think that some of the articles should be deleted. But can they be put up for deletion again? I dont know where to take the articles from here, please some guidance. Smbarnzy 14:18, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Ive added alot of references for the article, but i don't know how to link them all and make them into proper wiki format, can you show me a page on how to do it properly or do it yourself? Thanks. Smbarnzy 14:15, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
The references have all been fixed up by user: Huon . I was wondering if we can remove the primary sources tag. Thanks Smbarnzy 10:05, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Thats cool man, i dont need much help. I was wondering if you could fix up the info box for me please, im not wiki-literate yet (removing random line and centering logo) Thanks =) Smbarnzy 10:19, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for being so demanding of your time =) but i was wondering if you could either review the article, or suggest where i can take it from here. Thanks Smbarnzy 10:31, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for all of the help you have given me in regard to the article, all of the spelling and grammar and general info/editng work you have done is just great. Thanks a million =) Smbarnzy 11:38, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Can you nominate the page Aquinas College Perth Academic Studies for deletion - ive come to the realisation that it just isnt worth being on wikipedia. Its scope is too small and provides irrelevant information which would be useful to no-one at all. Thanks Smbarnzy 13:33, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Ive added some images to the article that i took myself, what other images can i take for the article? Im not quite sure what its missing - i just know its missing something. Thanks =) Smbarnzy 16:48, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Aquinas College, Perth

Hey man, ive messed up the references badly, and the notable alumni. i cant even undo my edits =S, ok so its not showing thereferences in the article, but you can see it all when you go to change the article via the "edit this page" tab. its very wierd. help reqd immediately. Smbarnzy 13:26, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Images at WP:WA

Thanks for neatening up WP:WA header. I think a few little images here and there may prompt some interest. Perhaps a lttle table of flags: Image:Western Australian Governors Flag.png, Australian Aboriginal Flag, National Colonial Flag, and emblems might also improve the page. I'm a big fan of the use text and image to convey info. Will try to learn about code and layout for future edits and save me bothering you. Regards Fred 14:19, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Ta. Will let you know how I get on. I'm trying to learn everything at once but will get there in the end. Fred

Archiving Talk Pages

Rict

I don't think the external links are a straightforward case of linkspam. There's no evidence of ads or any other revenue stream derived from having links from Wikipedia. Whether or not they were appropriate external links comes down to Number 1 in Wikipedia:External_links#Links normally to be avoided:

1. Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article.

I'll leave it to you to make that decision.

But that's not really why you blocked. The reason you blocked is because this user appeared to ignore your messages, so it looked like they were going to plough on adding links come hell or high water. Their stated excuse

"The reason that I did not comply with the request to stop was that I did not notice that I had received a message. It is the first time I have edited a Wikipedia site and I was pasting the links into the sites - so I had already exceeded the number of alerts before noticing that I was doing anything wrong."

is believable (and polite). I would be inclined to AGF and unblock, but point the user to Wikipedia:Spam#How not to be a spammer and Wikipedia:External links.

Hesperian 03:28, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry I wasn't here at the time - seems like a new user who didn't know the rules rather than intending to violate them to me, but there was no way to know that initially by their actions. I'd largely agree with Hesperian - the site itself doesn't seem particularly spammy, although the census is more useful/reliable (albeit out-of-date) - I've come across it before when dealing with Adelaide articles because the City of Tea Tree Gully is one of their clients. Orderinchaos78 11:49, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Difficult IMO to see how they could miss 3 messages in 10 minutes - my setup, which is the standard one, really doesn't allow me that luxury when I receive one. I'm also a bit concerned about the fact that he is promoting his or his employer's site - I think the WP:AUTO rule is marginally relevant here. The site seems good and is largely non-POV (unless you consider the fact it is not a *complete* listing of Australian LGAs as a slanting factor - I see only six WA ones - meaning people who want to look up, say, Perth, Belmont or Canning receive no information whatsoever), although from a Wiki point of view WP:NOT#DIR seems to apply. It is useful to the audience it's meant to reach (i.e. businesses looking to advertise or operate in a region who need a bird's eye view) but Wikipedia is aiming for something quite different. Orderinchaos78 12:25, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Almost forgot - a key feature of how this site does its stats is to combine CCDs. This is great if you're trying to analyse a population internally, but by simply recombining them without reference to suburb boundaries, they've often ignored rational guidelines of "community of interest". An example is Bullsbrook-Gnangara, which as you can see from the map combines several very different areas in an inseparable way. [1] Orderinchaos78 12:36, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ghangarra,

Happy New Year! Sorry to bother you again! I really liked your comments regarding the Ohio Wesleyan University page. images

Thanks for the images. The B. baxteri one especially is great.

B. telmatiaea image raises a lot of questions. The leaves are right; the inflorescence looks right; but all the references refer to it as a bush, and this is a low spreading ground cover. Why? Is it a baby? An unusual strain? A reaction to exposed location and/or well-drained soil? Maybe Cas will know.... Hesperian 10:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

It was about 1500mm x 1000mm so it must have been a reasonable age, got some other I'll up load tonight. based on the tag it isnt a cultivar, but its in the same sopt that I got the flower spike last year, Epica is located opposite but I'm not happy with the pics of the whole plant, some ok close ones, setting what should be a very good show of flowers. Also got one that I need to ID first plus porcupine, showy, and burdetti which were all in flower. Ended taking 54 images, digital is good, have to find away for you to see the lot and select then ones you think are worth uploading. Gnangarra 11:29, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Excellent <rubs hands together> I can't wait. Why not upload them all, then request deletion for the ones you don't want? I suppose that's easy for me to say; I don't have to do all the work. And deletion would be much easier if one of us had sysop on Commons. If you want to email me any or all, I'll be happy to give my opinion. Hesperian 11:39, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
On another note, I've just posted a rather obscure article with a rather dreadful title: Bentham's taxonomic arrangement of Banksia. I want to do Thiele and Ladiges' taxonomic arrangement of Banksia too, so that I can clear it out of Taxonomy of Banksia. What do you reckon. Have I gone stark raving? Nice. Have left my two cents on whether to upload them on the gallery captions. I had a crack at identifying the unids, but got it wrong as usual. Have added Cas' ids to keep things all together. Hesperian 00:00, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

GA

Hamersley got approved as a GA. So now comes the long road to FA - I've spent a week in the library so hopefully I can put together a worthy history section for it. Thanks for suggesting I take it there - the review will be useful as well. Can you also re-review Cullacabardee (I changed the 4 to a 6 as the source for the 4 was Transperth's journey planner *embarrassed look*) Orderinchaos78 13:38, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

No worries, it's not urgent - was just more housekeeping side of things. :) And yep, I've been working on a couple of FAC's and GAC's to try and gain experience of how an evaluator would think and the sort of issues that come up. Hopefully going to get to writing the new one as a draft tomorrow. Orderinchaos78 14:31, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Copyvio in Periyar

I noticed that you protected the Periyar article. I am concerned that large sections of the text in the article are copy-pasted from this article on countercurrents.org, which is a copyright violetion. Field v paddock

Before we get into an edit war on this, where did you get the idea that "field" is the common word in WA? I don't know about market gardening and other kinds of intensive agronomy, but grew up in the Wheatbelt, on a wheat farm, and have worked as a journalist on national farming magazines. I can say with absolute certainty, that in Australian broadacre farming (i.e. most cereal, sheep, beef, etc operations), the word "field" is rarely, almost never used in the sense that it is in other countries. The word is paddock, and WA is no exception. Grant65 | Talk 12:35, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Banksia

Funny how a lot of these are getting close to FA standard all at the same time. B. epica awaits only images and a linkfix bot. B. telmatiaea is on the very cusp of completion. B. rosserae is probably a week or two away. I've started pushing Taxonomy of Banksia along again. If we're not careful we'll have a queue of FAC-able articles that we're holding back from nominating so as not to get on people's nerves ;-) Hesperian 23:32, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Dear Gnangarra,

Thank you for note regarding Image:RedBlackCap.jpg. I was wondering if you could clarify what the problem with the image is? Thank you again for your question! LaSaltarella 01:08, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Copyright Question

Hi Gnangarra :) Re Template:PD-Australia - I'm trying to figure out the status of two images -

  • An aerial photo published in a supplement of the West Australian in August 1969.
  • A suburb plan published in the minute book of a town planning committee in November 1968. The plans are different to what actually got built.

I'm hoping I can use one or both - have assumed till now that I can't. Thanks :) Orderinchaos78 02:07, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) It was more a case of hoping I could use them than being in dire straits without them - I'd assumed until reading that template that I definitely could not, so wanted to check the interpretation. And no worries, I know how it gets (damn real world, getting in the way of our infinitely more important Wikipedia work :P ) Orderinchaos78 14:57, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Re:Response to SatuSuro talk comment

You don’t have to understand Chinese, this is a common sense that all languages Wikipedias ’policies and criteria would be the same under the wikipedia trade mark even you don’t speak multiple languages! Otherwise, that will confuse editors who have multiple accounts in various languages wikipedias. As you know, it should have people speak multiple languages in the world! For example, I have accounts in Chinese, Japanese and English Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#General_criteria #11 Blatant advertising carefully, The Sunset Coast couldn’t fulfill any criteria that have been mentioned. The Sunset Coast is a place, destination where open for public for free! Anyone can go his/her own without paying a cent! Also, please don’t misunderstand! I was just replying SatuSuro’s message; I didn’t have intention speak anything with anyone! You don’t have to respond me. Somehow, I don’t have too much time spend in this virtual world!--Alfeewusy 04:52, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Alumni Pages

In regard to the Aquinas College Alumni page - i was wondering if the names should be sorted by last name not first name so instead of Barry Chris being in B, the name would be in the C section? what is the standard for this sort of thing? thanks. Smbarnzy 10:30, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Summary

Excellent -of the night out and all - I was very impressed by the conviviality, good natured positive and really genuine people we work with. I do hope you get a better nights sleep. SatuSuro 14:09, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Cheers for a good night out. Fine work with the prompt upload. A surreal experience. Fred 16:12, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Safavids

Hi. You have protected the article Safavids. Could you also put a "accuracy is disputed" tag on top of it, just to signalize that the content of the intro is controversial and disputed?! That would be helpful.

Thanks Tājik 17:12, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Focus Group Holdings Limited is at AfD

You removed the speedy tag from Focus Group Holdings Limited. The article is now a AfD. Another editor has listed an article that you have been involved in editing, Focus Group Holdings Limited, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Focus Group Holdings Limited. Please look there to see why this is, if you are interested in whether it should be deleted. Thank you. --Eastmain 01:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC) --Eastmain 01:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Forrest

Im amazed that place and chase are two separate articles - what do you think? SatuSuro 14:18, 3 February 2007 (UTC) Hmm- if developed the chase might come to something - but theyre both a bit flimsy of sorts at the moment - but will leave as is - one of many cbd issues to return to at a later date SatuSuro 14:25, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Wow - if the swan coastal plain had any rain but no main plain rain but only on the darling scarp would the carp harp on about no rain on the swan coastal plain? SatuSuro 14:32, 3 February 2007 (UTC) (oops got carried away again - I can see myself needing to tone down my flippancy, too much hot weather or chlorine from the pool - one or the other) SatuSuro 14:37, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
OK got the message - we merge chase with place with no chase? or do we disgrace chase first - warning to merge - or sudden without notice? SatuSuro 14:37, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Was so impressed by your split signature that I copied.... SatuSuro 14:46, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

An article which you started, or significantly expanded, Ludwig Preiss, was selected for DYK!

Updated DYK query On February 6, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ludwig Preiss, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Re: a Question

You can delete the edit by deleting the article then restoring (i.e. undeleting) every edit except the dodgy one. This will remove the edit in question from the article history, but the edit summary will still be visible to admins only, in the deletion history. If K is not satisfied with that, the only option is to take it to WP:OVERSIGHT. Hesperian 11:34, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Just be aware that contributions can be misattributed if you delete an edit. For example, suppose Hesperian the vandal changes
"John Forrest was born in 1747"
to
"John Forrest was gay in 1747"
Then SatuSuro comes along, doesn't notice the vandalism but does notice that the century is wrong, so corrects it to:
"John Forrest was gay in 1847".
Then Gnangarra deletes Hesperian's edit. The result is that the article says "born in 1747" before SatuSuro's edit, and "gay in 1847" after it, so the diff makes it looks like SatuSuro is the vandal.
In the case currently before us, it is a non-issue; the next edit is a revert, so by deleting the problem edit will make the next edit look like a dummy edit. Probably would be courteous to delete the revert too, so that the history maintains a logical flow. However, by the time I've finished writing this interminable post, you'll have done the job, so don't worry about it.

Bleah tell me about it - been there suffered that...SatuSuro 11:47, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
When I was going around deleting the "Xtra is a homophobe" vandal's crap, I had to delete and semi-restore a number of articles with long edit histories: Australia for example. I found the "(Un)check All" bookmarklet invaluable. Hesperian 12:11, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
BTW, have you seen what I've been up to on Commons? - over half finished now. Hesperian 12:12, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Didn't want to overload [[Category:Biogeographical maps of Australia]]. Didn't want to create subcategory [[Category:IBRA region maps]] until I had a few maps to populate it. Then got busy uploading and forgot all about it. I will eventually. Hesperian 12:23, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Quick one - re Image:Aquinas college map.JPG - has the correct action been taken with regard to it or is another preferable? Orderinchaos78 02:34, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Hi. In case OIC gets flamed for it, I had better take the credit for the copyvio notice. The whole kit is dubious and I seem to recall that they have been warned about it. The response seems to have been to strip attribution from the images and reattribute them to themselves and eachother. I believe this stretches the policy of assuming good faith beyond tolerance. The logo, crests and, perhaps the facade must have serious concerns regarding their provenance. I am new to commons (also), but am aware of the seriousness of the issue of correct license and attribution. Will the commons editors chase the other questionable uploads.
