[edit] Editor repeatedly misrepresenting sources

Hi, around 13 of Feb you posted the following

I note that you are in what appears to be an d edit war with Prester John on the David Hicks article, you have reverted 3 times please consider yourself cautioned about WP:3RR and that you may be blocked. Gnangarra 02:31, 13 January 2008 (UTC) on my talk page.

The reversions were over a source being misrepresented on a BLP, unsourced accusations being placed on a BLP.

I now realise that your warning was contrary to WP:BLP which explicitly excludes such reverts. SmithBlue (talk) 17:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

It was the 13 January I also warned Prester John [1] WP:3RR says that all parties should be warned before blocking, if you have a problem with a blp issue instead of revert warring you should post to WP:AN/I or WP:BLP/N and get outside view normally an admin, who can protect/block where appropriate. I didnt see any reference to a blp issue in the edit summaries before warning, only edit summaries typical of POV warring. Also when warned you should have raise the issue at the time if I was aware of a BLP issue(to me it was only a wording issue) I would have been able to take appropriate steps. Gnangarra 00:00, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion of WP:BLP/N - I am still learning - though my edit summs of

01:16, 13 January 2008 (hist) (diff) David Hicks‎ (the refrernce cited is for allegations - pls find another reference or discuss on talk page why you think we should put these allegations forward as being proved unsourced)

02:08, 13 January 2008 (hist) (diff) David Hicks‎ (revert - the reference you supply does not contain the "facts" you claim. pls see discussion page)

02:40, 13 January 2008 (hist) (diff) User talk:Gnangarra‎ (→David Hicks allegations: Hopefully someone else will enforce WP:BLP)

do not seem to me typical of "POV warring" - but then what do I know? PresterJohn did the same edit one month later. When I took this issue to ANI I got no response. So at present have no confidence in WP admins enforcing boundaries on editors or my understanding of policies and procedures. See [[2]] for my latest attempt to make sense of this issue. SmithBlue (talk) 05:41, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

hard one to resolve, but I'm not neutral in as i have been an editor of the David Hicks article, you need to consider taking the matter to WP:ARBCOM Gnangarra 18:18, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Admin Coaching Re-confirmation

Hello, previously you expressed interest in participating in the Wikipedia:Admin coaching project. We are currently conducting a reconfirmation drive to give coaches the opportunity to update their information and capacity to participate in the project. Please visit Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Status to update your status. Also, please remember to update your capacity (5th table variable) in the form of a fraction (eg. 2/3 means you are currently coaching 2 students, and could accept 1 more student). Thank you. [edit] East Timor invasion and occupation

Thank you for your comments on Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975-1999). I've worked very hard to keep it NPOV, and I'm more than a little frustrated that – despite my obvious willingness to work with you to clear up the issue – you've taken it to GA re-assessment so quickly.

However, my main goal right now is to clear up the concerns you have, so let's find a way to do this. If I moved the discussion of foreign powers (US, Japan, Australia, Canada, Britain) to a separate section, would this satisfy your objection? Please give me some guidance to help satisfy your concerns. Thanks again! – Scartol • Tok 14:13, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I've made the changes described above, and removed the references to trade between Indonesia, Japan and Canada as you requested. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 20:19, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
I believe we've got a problem here. The image at the top of the page and the caption with it were not POV. The caption was cited, and the image was more than appropriate for the top of the article. (I searched very hard to find that image.) Listing it as simply a donated item does not represent how the East Timorese feel about it, and therefore the current caption is, in my opinion, itself POV.
Perhaps we need to bring in a third party? I don't want to make this into a big debate, but I also don't appreciate seeing the layout and information moved around without just cause. – Scartol • Tok 01:08, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
I understand your concern and I'm very conscious of the potential for conflict of interest vis a vis myself and the East Timor article. However, I think (hope) you'll agree that I've been very careful to adhere to the requirements for WP:V, WP:RS and – though you may disagree, I swear to you that I have been trying – WP:NPOV. I'm more than willing to work with you to balance the POV you see in the article, and I ask that you please assume good faith as I work to bring this article to featured status. Clearly the MilHist project believes that it's NPOV enough to merit an A-class rating, so I wonder if perhaps we could work together? Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 02:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm a bit late but Happy Birthday, Mr Gnangarra. :)

This is only Gnangarra's tenth birthday so it's rather special - he's finally reached double digits!

Hope you had a good day, Gnang. And I'm sorry I'm a bit late, but it's still your birthday by the Wikipedia clock so I reckon that's what we should go by! Anyway, happy birthday my friend. I hope you have a very happy and healthy year ahead. Cheers, Sarah 18:05, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Airport reversions

You obviously don't know the background to the Indonesia airport related edits from 125.164.x.x addresses. A pattern of massive and continual vandalism has been happening for months now. More details are available on Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Vitrox92. AGF faith isn't practical or necessary on the scale this vandal operates at. If you you saying you time to double-check their edits everyday to see if there is any shard of truth among the flood of hoaxes then good luck to you, but you obviously haven't checked any of the information contained in them because you would have seen the bulk of the information inserted is hoax information. As an administrator I would expect you would apply AGF to established editors such as myself before undoing edits, but who knows why you haven't? (Caniago (talk) 14:00, 1 March 2008 (UTC))

Gn, I think there may have been a misunderstanding caused by undisplayable characters/fonts on your machine. TOM's previous signature didn't like like ????? ??? to me. It looked like... well, there's no point writing it, because it will only come out looking to you like ????? ??? again. But it was Japanese. I'm guessing your machine didn't know how to render this character set, so substituted question marks instead.

I think this rather proves your point though — signatures that require a special character set are not really appropriate.

Hesperian 06:03, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please reconsider deletion of Star Sonata

Star Sonata has been around for 3 years and has a very dedicated following. There are two tiers of players, free to play and premium. While the number of premium players may be low compared to some AAA MMO's, Star Sonata is an indy project with approximately 100,000 characters active in the last 3 months and allows free play for an unlimited amount of time. It is also notable for some of its unique game design elements in the MMORPG space, specifically that one player can "win" the game by becoming crowned emperor, the world resets every 3-4 months with a new, re-randomized universe, and the heavy emphasis on persistent bases and automated slave ships that are always up and running even when the player is logged out. Premium memberships have also been doubling every 6 months for the last year. The 400 number of premium users that you cited as reason for deletion is very old, and not relevant compared to the number of active free to play players.

I have looked at the Notability guidelines for Wikipedia. Star Sonata is listed in, and has its own forum section at, MMORPG.com, the premier MMOPRG site here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?SETVIEW=overview&GAMEID=160&bhcp=1, is listed at IGN: http://pc.ign.com/objects/710/710931.html, has a full review at Game Zone magazine: http://pc.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r25030.htm, as well as being listed and reviewed at many other sites. Google for "Star Sonata" results in 67,400 hits. I apologize for not participating in the discussion about deletion earlier, but as I said, this is an Indy game and we don't have a full time marketing person or people to watch this sort of thing. I believe that Star Sonata does pass the notability guidelines as listed in Wikipedia. Please reconsider the deletion or if there is some formal process for reconsideration, please let me know. Thanks. JeffL (talk) 21:25, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

the discussion you refer to is from September 2007. From your comment above I apologize for not participating in the discussion about deletion earlier, but as I said, this is an Indy game and we don't have a full time marketing person or people to watch this sort of thing, raises some serious concerns over a conflict of interest. WP:WEB as a guideline has changed since September and what was required then is not the same as the requirements now, I didnt cite any reason for deletion the discussion said that there was only ~400 players at that time. Normally I'd offer to restore it to your user space for the issues raised at AfD to be addressed first but under the circumstances presented, what I recommend is that you list it at WP:DRV and highlighting your COI and ask for the community to make a decision. Gnangarra 21:57, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, I added it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2008_April_4#Star_Sonata), which I think is the correct place. Thanks. JeffL (talk) 22:10, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

The editor was harassing Merbabu, he has been blocked previously for the same thing, all related to the same article, as its solely a troll my actions are justified. If you want to revert feel free to do so but I have no such intention of giving credence to who take such action. Gnangarra 07:47, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Bit of a defensive response, I was only asking, but okay that's fair enough. Thanks for the prompt response, Gnangarra. SGGH speak! 09:32, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi. User:Domaleixo aka "Emerson" added a post to my Talk page about the infobox in the article Portuguese Timor.
You apparently deleted this post from my Talk page.
Please don't do this. It's not polite.

Re your comments about this on my Talk page --
- "Deletion was justified." - I don't know whether I'd agree that deletion was "justified" or not. In any case, I would prefer to see such posts for myself and make up my own mind on their merits or lack thereof.
- "do we accept such actions against a long time contributor, IMHO we dont!" - Again, I would prefer to make up my own mind whether or not I "accept" any particular actions, and I can hardly do that if other people delete them before I see them. (Or at least I then have to track them down in the edit history.)
- "you could have saved some time by reading my talk page ... rather than furthering the drama along" - Frankly, I think that was rude of you. I don't like drama and seek to defuse it when I see it rather than encouraging it.
Disagreeing with people or mentioning policies to them is not in and of itself "trolling" or "drama". It really bothers me to see how incredibly sensitive many people are to disagreement and criticism, and how their first response is hostility rather than civility.
- "the troll that is being feed." - IMHO "to acknowledge the existence of a troll" and "to feed a troll" are often two different things. I was not aware of User:Domaleixo's behavior until he posted to my Talk page. If he's trolling, I'll probably recognize that for myself, and I may be inclined to act against such behavior. If you hide trolling, people don't see it, don't recognize it, and won't act against it.
-- Bottom line: Please let people decide for themselves how to react to posts. If somebody is trolling, then by doing so you'll gain allies against them. Have a good one. -- Writtenonsand (talk) 13:18, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
