my camera work was a bit slanted this evening - what prog did you use to adjust the tilt? Gnangarra, this evening at that beach was the closest i think i will ever get to a religious experience. The light, clouds and sea were all just perfect. I ended up jumping in for a swim and it only got better with the contrast of the grey sand and a brilliant, beautiful blue under water. It was excellent visibility it almost felt like I could live under there. I even made a friend of a starfish. Anyway enough of my ramble. Thank youFancyfootwork 14:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Due to a foul-up, my WP email page was not activated which has now been fixed. As noted on the Meetup talk page, could you please email me with the details you'd like to have placed on your nametag. RE:Michael Jeffery

Hey Gnangarra no worries about the addition. Just a small note when you add a entry to the AUS Mil Portal it may be necessary to increase the random portal component, this is done by editing the main portal page and changing the number of entries. Also do you know of a fair use image of Michael Jeffery that could be used. Hossen27 07:34, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Australian cat

Hi Gnangarra, I stumbled to this anon editor's contributions. He is actively labelling some Australians, as either in the Category:Anti-Zionists or Category:Australian Jews. It appears that he is labelling without any sources. For instances, Sussan Ley as anti-zionist and Raspberry Cordial as Australian Jewish, but nowhere in the article mentioning about Jewish/Israel relationship. I have limited knowledge about Australia, so I just want to let you know. Oh, and also the first category (Anti-Zionist) is really prone to POV because editors can just simply categorize article into that cat. Cheers. — Indon (reply) — 10:37, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

banksia/dryandra dist map

Something to ponder on a quiet night, Does this map need up dating or are the dryandra distributions already covered. Gnangarra 14:31, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Judging by this and this, there is probably an argument for moving the distribution boundary a tad further north just west of Kalgoorlie, but any adjustment would be minor. Taken in the context of all the other changes still ahead of us, such fixing up Banksia to refer to around 170 species instead of 80 species, I wouldn't stress about it much. Warnings you added at User talk:Nullarborbilby

I don't think the use of ten warnings like you did at User talk:Nullarborbilby was appropriate - nullarbornet.com.au is a good site and was already linked from quite a few articles. I have written an untemplatised message for the user who is probably not familiar with Wikipedia's policies about external links, conflict of interest ETC. and was clearly trying to add links and content in good faith. Warnings certainly don't need to be added cumulatively over an hour after a user has stopped editing. However I would have reverted some of the added links like the one added to Kimba, a disambiguation page. Graham87 12:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Kings Park images

I have transferred those images to Commons at your request, and edited the eternal flame one because it was too underexposed and not centred. I don't mind putting my images on Commons, I just don't like people uploading it there on my behalf without giving me an opportunity to do it myself using my own account there. - Mark 08:11, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Australian Companies clean-up

Thanks for your message. If you've not noticed, i've started to undertake a category cleanup as noted on the WP:AUS talk page. With the majority of companies I prefer to err on the side of caution and go AfD instead of PROD or CSD A7 (db-corp), one man's non-notable may not always be agreed with. I also find that if someone else does consider them notable within Australia, it will also spur improvements to it. Thewinchester (talk) 11:49, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Aboriginal Australian Nomination for ACOTF

I think that the nomination is a very good idea, esp. with the anniversary coming up, but I was wondering if there is somewhere which specifies what the article requires to improve its rating? Also, being a newbie, I wouldn't mind being adopted.  :) You can find me at User:Baby ifritah. You'll have to forgive the page though; I haven't really done much with it. xx baby_ifritah 13:21, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I shall add my nomination for it. Regarding adoption. I assume that means I can ask you all my silly questions? I am having a problem with a new article I am working on about Robbery Under arms which Garrie requested. It is currently at User:Baby ifritah/Robbery Under Arms. The last couple of sections are not displaying when it is saved, even though the coding is there. Do you know why that would happen and how I could fix it? Also, it's just a sub-page. Should it be a user sandbox subpage? oh, and i love kyneton. was out there for a wedding a couple of weeks ago. xx baby_ifritah 13:48, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Air Force Amy (second nomination)

Would you say that was a "without prejudice" deletion, or a "with prejudice" deletion? In other words, if I find more reliable source references, (The Tyra Banks Show [2]; The New Yorker [3]; MSNBC [4]; HBO [5]; Reno Gazette-Journal [6]) should I just recreate the article, or go through a Wikipedia:Deletion review first? --AnonEMouse (squeak) 15:50, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Tyra Banks ref

  • topic is the Bunny ranch
  • 1 paragraph mentions amy - she isnt the primary subject her comments appear to be about the industry and the pieces about her are unverified.

NY Times ref

  • topic is bunnyranch
  • Amy is mentioned only briefly in passing.

MSNBC ref

  • topic is Bunny Ranch
  • only 30 second converstion with crosby

HBO ref

  • Catthouse special
  • inside look at Bunny ranch, amy is shown but isnt the subject of the show

Reno Gazette ref

  • Subject- Bunny Ranch burns down

What you've presented to me is fives sources about the Bunny Ranch where they mention Air Force Amy but she isnt the subject of those articles. From this I dont see anything that would warrant an article about Amy. WP:N says that is notable if it has received significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. these refs arent significant coverage of Amy, they are of Bunny Ranch though. That said there is enough for a paragraph in the Bunny Ranch article, whats needed is an article where Amy is the primary subject not where she works.

The best comparison I can offer is you've got enough for an article about a trucking company there isnt any reason for an article on one of its drivers. Gnangarra 01:35, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

OK, you still aren't convinced, but that wasn't the question I was asking. I wasn't trying to convince you as an editor, I was asking how you, as an admin, consider to have closed the AfD. The question is, can I recreate it without a wheel war -- your speedily deleting it as recreation of deleted content -- or do I have to go through DRV? See, even if you're not convinced, that's OK, I think the people who argued in the AfD will be. At least one of them asked for proof that Amy appeared in more than one episode of the HBO series, the ref above shows that. Others asked for other things. While convincing you is nice, this is more of a process question. --AnonEMouse (squeak) 13:20, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Courtesy notice, as you didn't respond to the last one a few days ago ... I rewrote it with better references, and restored the history. Air Force Amy. Take a look, and if you still feel it doesn't meet Wikipedia:Notability, feel free to nominate for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. I do believe it is substantially different enough not to be speedy deleted as a recreation, though. --AnonEMouse (squeak) 18:23, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Maps galore

G'day - I have a favour/challenge to ask. I'm trying to get Amanita phalloides to be the first fungus to FA and it could really do with a map (though this one is of the world, not Australia). Here is a link to a pdf of the file with its distribution, both native and introduced. [7] I have edited this more than any other article but it still needs work.

As well, I'm working on Banksia ericifolia and Banksia spinulosa from time to time as I have this idea of getting the ones up which have issues with classification to sort out..the other biggies are Banksia marginata and which page we push for the Banksia sphaerocarpa complex. cheers, Cas Liber | talk | contribs 20:42, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I can provide TBA scans for these if you want. B. telmatiaea is in the Sphaerocarpa complex, and going along nicely. Hesperian 00:35, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
I should clarify that as the sphaerocarpas that are still arguably subspecies - caesia, dolichostyla and the new one which will be described in George's new book from the Nannup area. In any case the race is on to see which one shapes up the best next. Any point in getting any nominated for GA or not really as we have FAs to compare anyway... ;)cheers, Cas Liber | talk | contribs 13:55, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
PS: Re Amanita phalloides map, I mean the one on p1138 which would need 4 colours...(native for europe and N africa, introduced for the red bits, query native/or diff spp. for asia and query native/introduced for Western US) Can't wait ta see it cheers, Cas Liber | talk | contribs 13:55, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Gn, somehow I missed your message on my talk page yesterday, sorry. I now won't be able to send you the scans until Monday. Hesperian 00:19, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Greetings

From the nether world of the long lonely at times insanely absurd hike through Australian categories - I have finally got to the point where I have decided that I should remove unsigned (probably never any use to the category or the average user) comments that appear on some - however before I implement this early may resolution I thought I would pass it by fellow eds albeit admins as to whether I should do so - or should I just leave them. If pressed I could give egs - but the process - of seeing stupid questions or statement with no sigs on the category page - and no sign that there ever will be a followup - seems to invite reverting so as to cleanup the catgory page - and boo hoo to the editors who expected that anyone wouild ever respond to something on the cat page in the first place. any thoughts on this would be appreciated, cheers SatuSuro 01:33, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

It is a big project but user:Cyberjunkie has suggested a bigger one "Culture and the Arts", and when I first posted a message suggesting Arts and Literature at WP Australia user:SatuSuro suggested a smaller one. I want all the advice and help I can get, and if there's no interest in my proposal it goes down anyway, cos I can't do it all myself. Is there somewhere I can set up a temporary discussion page, which i can link to in the proposal, so everyone can discuss it together rather than communicating through individuals' talk pages? I have no vested interest in the "how" overall, I just would like ozlit not to be such a dog's breakfast.  :)

Hi! I think this is how I post to your talk page. I guess that kind of proves my point... you are on the Adopter list and I really need a mentor. I have some experience (50-75 edits and quite a bit of policy reading) from before I was registered, but not much. Daylight saving time (Featured Article Candidate)

Thanks for your recent contribution to the Featured Article Candidate discussion page for Daylight saving time. On one point I think you may have misread the page, as the page doesn't say that DST typically starts in March and finishes in October; it merely gives rules for Europe, North America, and Chile as examples. But if the wording is confusing, any suggestions for rewording would be appreciated.

I didn't follow the "glosses over negative aspects" comment, possibly because the comment was a bit terse. What negative aspects of DST are glossed over in the article? I did attempt to cover all the main arguments, both pro and con.

As for political aspects, politics are mentioned several times on the page, albeit scattered in several sections: I thought that was more helpful than having a separate "Politics" section (which too often invites counterproductive POV wars). The current page does attempt to cover all the pro-and-con issues raised by Matt Birney, Alan Carpenter, Vincent Catania, John D'Orazio, Brendon Grylls, Eric Ripper, etc., albeit not in a Western Australian context. I don't know of any issue these politicians have raised that weren't raised long ago by the likes of Churchill and Asquith (who are mentioned) but I admit I haven't seen everything these folks have said or written on the subject. Thanks for your welcome at my Talk Page

I'm not sure whether I should respond here or on my Talk Page? I assume that you don't visit every talk page you ever comment on every day so how is it done? Do I post on your Talk Page and then you post back to mine OR if we keep on talking on one person's page how does the other person know to look for it? Sterry2607 00:15, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks re talk question

I think I understand that by the disjointed style you mean I reply on your page and you reply on my page? Did I get that? I hadn't seen that Managing Talk page before so I'll look at that. I had got my Watchlist going, for the main page I started working on, but hadn't used it for User Pages. Are you saying that if I 'watch' your page and SatuSuro's for example, I can see through my watchlist any changes/responses? Does it get overwhelming as you add pages to watch? Sorry to be a bother ... I'm off to lunch with my oldies now so will leave you in peace. Sterry2607 01:23, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Added "Politics" section to Daylight saving time

After another user agreed with you about politics and Daylight saving time, I decided it was 2 against 1 and so added a new section Politics, and followed up on the Featured article candidate discussion. The new section even references the recent DST controversy in Western Australia (in for a penny, in for a pound I suppose). Please let me know what you think. Eubulides 08:16, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Images

I'm playing around with images but I uploaded one that is way too big (2Mb). When I linked it to my user page it overflowed, if you know what I mean. How do I delete it? Can I delete it?

Also, where do people find images for articles they are writing eg for biography subjects? Sterry2607 08:33, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

B. telmatiaea

That is absolutely brilliant. And so are you. Can't wait for the others!

After all that, it does look like it is the same plant. But now we have in its native habitat, with a normal habit instead of some bizarre ground cover.

Did you notice that I wrote Yule Brook Botany Reserve? So now you have another article in which to showcase your talents. ;-)

P.S. Congrats on that other thing. I'm curious to know the details, if you're willing to share.

Hesperian 06:28, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

The article is looking really great now. You gave us a good image for nearly every section - description (flower, bushy habit), distribution and habitat (your map, a good photo of vegetation), ecology (a dead adult with open follicles illustrating serotiny), cultivation (an "untidy" bush with obscured flower spikes, per the text) - I could hardly have asked for better or more.
I guess I have better get off my arse and finish the text. I've just found a new source; telmatiaea is one of the six species covered in Scott (1982) The impact of destructive insects on reproduction in six species of Banksia L.f. Proteaceae, Aust. J. Zool. 30, 901–921. Once I've worked in the material from that, I'd say we're done.

Would you be willing to accept me as an adoptee, sort of a partial adoption? I anticipate that I would need occasional advice on policy and culture in wikipedia but not a lot of hand holding. Its best to read WP:COPY for full details, but in essence when a person creates something they have a moral right as creator of the work(what ever its form), this right isnt transferred when the work is sold either. As creator your entitled to compensation when your work is displayed how you receive this compensation is where copyright offers choices.
If I take a photo I can release it as public domain to which I'm saying you can use this any way you want I dont want anything for it. Almost the same is GFDL/GNU is you can use this but you are required to attribute my efforts to me(Wikipdeias general license, hence the edit history for all pages). to that you can add a creative commons license that says you must attribute this to me, but dont need to ask first. Outside of these you get whats commonly known as "copyright" to which I say you must ask for my permission first and I'll set conditions of use, if you dont do this I'll have you in court faster than a wino to a bottle opening. Class of 2010

I am hoping to shed some light on your interest in the class system at Texas A&M University. At Texas A&M, your class year is defined by the date you enter the school. Even if you graduate late, early, or not at all, you are still a member of that class. Privileges associated with those classes are given to the entire class and, as such, a bond forms between members of each class. A few examples:

  • Only seniors can walk on the grass.
  • Only seniors wear boots in the Corps
  • Tickets to the football games are issued by class: grad students/seniors first, juniors second, etc

This is ingrained in freshmen from the day they step on school grounds at their new student conferences when they start to be encouraged to show pride in their class as a group. This is true many times over for classes in the Corps. Of my 21 buddies, I have been to all but 2 weddings (and I was deployed to the Middle East at the time) and stay in touch with all of them. I graduated in 2002. Medrano graduated in 2001, but joined us after spending 2 years as a non-reg (a nonregulation non-Corps student); originally the class of 1999, by joining the Corps as a fish, he renounced his class and became part of ours. Another one of my buddies, Jeff, never graduated. All of us though are members of the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of 2001. I will admit it is nonstandard (in regards to what other schools do), but it keeps students together even if they fall behind, change majors, etc. At class reunions, these students still meet up with the same people and not with strangers they knew for only 1-2 years. This is not a hostile note, merely a bit of education about this unique school. In short, to call a group of freshmen at A&M who entered in 2006 "the class of 2010," is entirely accurate. Exactly the kind of feedback we are looking for!!! Do you know anyone else who could read and give our article a boost in the Support categories (it would mean a lot to those of us working on it). If you didn't notice, we got some support from...and I still can't believe I'm saying it...an admin who is a longhorn!!! That's gotta say something for the article. By the way, the article doesn't really say much about the rivalry between us and that overglorified junior college in Austin. It's not so much a rivalry as it is a raging psychotic hatred. We've actually stolen their mascot, cooked, and ate it (well it was a cow, so you can see how that would be a natural course of action...). We branded their mascot with a major victory: 13-0. They connected the 1 and 3 to make a B, turned the dash into an E, and then slipped a V between the E and the O to make Bevo.
If you are ever down this way in the next few years, drop me a line and I'll personally give you a tour of the campus. BQZip01 talk 05:16, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Renames

Re: [9]. Just to let you know that there hasn't been any minimum edit requirement on renames for some time now. The crats have indicated that all requests with a legitimate reason (changing from a username that is against policy is obviously a legitimate reason) will be performed regardless of edit count. Disputed source

As I understand it, theangelsband.net is The Angels' official website. But Neeson is not a current member of the band, and hasn't been for years, and the site hardly mentions him, except when it discusses the band's early history in the biography section. Therefore Tony was happy to use it as a source for a statement about when Neeson left, but didn't think it appropriate as a general external link. Makes sense to me. GAC backlog elimination drive

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all members, and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :{{GAReview}} underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 00:03, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Deletion Review

Thanks for leaving detailed information on the Out Now Consulting deletion log. I found that to be helpful and appreciate it. I am still strongly convinced the article did meet the WP:CORP guidelines in at least several of the reliable sources. Just one example: Het Financieele Dagblad is a reliable source and I am not convinced the article would run in such a publication of this stature and be inserted into the International Herald Tribune as a promotion for the company - it is an article that announces the arrival of a new company setting up in business in Holland and is covered as I would expect a news story to be covered as a topic by a serious financial newspaper. Out Now Consulting is the substantial topic for this reliable secondary source, making it non-trivial as to notability for WP. It even ran on page 2 of that publication under the heading 'Domestic News' which is hardly where any promotional piece would appear, if they even ran them at all which I personally doubt. It is the equivalent of the Financial Times in the UK or the equivalent national financial daily newspaper in Australia. There were also other non-trivial secondary sources covering the article topic in terms that I feel more than met the WP:CORP policies. The policy states "The depth of coverage of the subject by the source must be considered. If the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple independent sources should be cited to establish notability. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability." I think that is where resolution of the matter is to be found. The coverage of Out Now as a subject that was cited in the article I found not to incidental nor trivial, and even if you thought that about some of the footnoted verified secondary sources, there was enough notable material there, in my opinion, to meet WP notability policies. The WP:SOAP issue you raised is not one that is borne out by any evidence except in claims by the nominator and one 'delete' editor as introduced at the very end of the discussion. The WP:COI issue was addressed earlier by 'keep' editors. That ought not therefore form part of a correct delete decision as it is one that can be levelled at every article about companies by 'delete' editors and then without any evidence risks being used by admins as part of a basis of their decision to delete - which is a very drastic course to take. Any article could be edited by anyone but WP:SOAP is not shown to be the case here. The Western Australia issue still troubles me to be honest, as it just seems unusual to me that half the delete editors were from Western Australia - even if it is an active community on WP over there that is still quite statistically unexpected, even for an Australia related topic. You also are obviously from Western Australia and I guess you may be known to the nominator of the article for deletion that you deleted, as you both left comments on my talk page about my username earlier this week. That is not entirely comfort-building for me either. Please do not take any offence at this as none at all is intended - far from it. I want to seek your advice now to try to resolve things without further undue stress to any concerned. Is there a process whereby an independent edit can be sought before re-submitting a revised version of the article? I tried so hard to get it into strong WP shape during the course of this delete debate and hope that work is not for nought - the article was incredibly important to me last year and, quite apart from that, I remain of the strong opinion it is notable for WP. Thanks for any advice you can offer. JeffStryker 14:37, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

My comment

I want to say that the information that i left on the scotch page was not as you claimed "a ramble" and that unfortunately i am the only person who has said something on the issue.
As you said the talk page is for discussing an article. I was. I have very strong feelings about how the students at scotch are treated.
I am als curious to what you meant by I could be held accountable for the comments that i made.
To what extent could i be held accountable
I am fully aware of what i said and do not regret it in the slightest.
If you had actually read the article i explained my comments fully and even added "And, as i can almost guarentee, i will probably be confronted sooner or later about this post "
The last thing i would like to say is that i am not the only person who feels this way and since i have expressed my opinions quite openly at the school, i have been approached by a number of the students who feel the same way as me, but wish to remain nameless as to not taint their reputation around the school, suggesting that i confront the issues and correct them appropriately.
Im my opinion, i posted it on the discussion page of it so that those ppl who felt like me could come forward, fully prepared to deal with the consequences of doing so.
So if you would like to block my user. Fine. But otherwise, i would appreciate to know your matters on the topic of my post.
Thank You
BTW, if you do end up blocking my user, please reply to my questions in this comment to willkca@gmail.com
--Willkca 12:22, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I have reviewed the material and I endorse Gnangarra's deletion. That was blatant misuse of Wikipedia. Article talk pages are for discussing how to improve the article, which you were not doing; and the site as a whole is for writing an encyclopaedia, which you were certainly not trying to do. If you want a forum to express your opinion, start a blog or something. If you misuse this site again, you can expect to be blocked. Hesperian 12:56, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
I also endorse, talk pages are for discussing the *article*, not the *subject* of the article. Orderinchaos 13:46, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
Well if that is the case, it should be made more clear. Willkca 23:29, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks re Out Now Consulting advice

Gnangarra, Thanks for that - sounds like a plan. I must admit to getting caught up in the debate and feel drained by it at this time. Think I will leave it for a few weeks at least. I kept a copy of the background history text from "edit" as one of the wp things I read said to do. If I do that, is there any practical time limit to when it needs to be submitted for DRV? I really like your suggestions about the review before requesting DRV as I really dont want to waste any more of my time or others if it can't be brought up to scratch. WP has usually been a place I got a lot of enjoyment from visiting - and I want it to continue that way. I think this article notable and important, sure, but I understand the need to meet the wp guidelines otherwise it defeats the purpose of having wp as a reference in the first place. One point about Wikia - if I listed the article there on Wikia - as it was in its last incarnation - for the meantime does that somehow prejudice its eligibility for WP DRV, as there seems to be some link between the two wikis but I must confess I could not understand how they relate to each other's content, and whether Wikia page precluded WP article ...Thanks again for the constructive feedback - a better end to an involving week.
