Template talk:Gmina Ruja

Reverting, not because I don't like the other look, but because most other Polish subdivisions already have navboxes done this way. Since there are often two of these boxes together on the same page (e.g. on the Gmina Ruja page itself), I find it looks strange if they represent different styles, even if the other style is more common throughout WP. Maybe the whole lot could be converted (preferably by a bot), but I'm not sure that the present style doesn't in fact have some advantages - it makes the whole thing look less "fussy" when there are more categories than the two we have here.--Kotniski (talk) 21:07, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- On the other hand, it makes them more consistent with the other navboxes throughout Wikipedia and it makes them more compact (it may render differently for different skins and browsers but for me the current version of the navbox takes up twice as much screen space as the one with groups). If I were to make a project of converting all the Polish subdivision navboxes, so that there's no inconsistency, would that sit okay? I don't have a bot but I've done things like this manually before. Bryan Derksen (talk) 19:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- I'm surprised the current version takes up more space on your screen than the grouped version - can you describe how the current version looks? (what's taking the space?) As for converting the whole lot, perhaps you could raise the matter at Portal talk:Poland/Poland-related Wikipedia notice board first, in case there are any objections. It's not a task I would want to undertake manually though - there must be about 500 such templates in existence.--Kotniski (talk) 08:43, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

- Better than describe, I can show. Screenshot is to the right showing "before" and "after" images. I just did a quick look around and by my count there are 478 templates in the Polish subdivision categories, so your estimate is unfortunately spot on. But I can think of a variety of ways to simplify the task. For example, all the navboxes I just had a look at had a highly standardized structure, so I could create templates specifically for Gminas (for example) that would do most of the formatting automatically. It's a big job but I've worked on jobs this big before, a few months back I helped move roughly 500 cricket-related templates from one format to another. I'll bring the issue up at the notice board you suggested in a few days when I've got a bit more spare time on my hands. Bryan Derksen (talk) 10:44, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
- See what you mean. I don't get that extra whitespace on my browser. Is it any better now (since my slight modification to the parameters)? Anyway, will wait for you to bring up the matter of wholesale change at the Poland talk page. If it goes through then I might be able to help out with the changes, using my bot (which was also used to create most of the templates in their existing form).--Kotniski (talk) 16:22, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
