To join Wikipedia you just create an account. Your friend can visit Wikipedia and click on "Sign in / Create an account" then click "Create one" to get an account.
See Cotton or the Reference desk for your cotton questions.
The Welcome template is copied from Template:Welcome, but it's not automatic, a user has to place the template on a page (by doing {{subst:Welcome}})--Commander Keane 00:58, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
