The data are for the Northern Hemisphere.

50 year averaged data are shown for 1000-1950, in blue, with upper limit to 95% confidence limit estimated from the IPCC annual data as 0.5/sqrt(50.0) up to 1600, and 0.3/sqrt(50.0) after 1600

10 year averaged data for 1950-2000 are shown, in red, with upper limit to 95% confidence limit estimated from the IPCC annual data as 0.15/sqrt(10.0)

The error bars on here appear to be significantly misleading. The original IPCC graph at the source page [1], contains a much larger 95% confidence limit (the grey region) than the graph prepared here. The shrinking of those error bars makes the historical data appear artificially more accurate than it is actually believed to be. Cortonin | Talk 04:50, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
