Globaloria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The GLOBALORIA Program was established by the World Wide Workshop Foundation in the spring of 2006 to build projects that empower people in the developing world and other underprivileged communities to experience elements of democracy and globalization through learning Internet technology Web 2.0 skills: accessing information, participating in real-time communication, publishing and connecting to the global community. This is of particular importance for youth, who can especially benefit from using technology and active access to information, interactive media, and real-time multicultural communication, as well as from the creation of economical and educational connections to the larger global community. As a first step, in order not to be left behind, all young people must learn what they can do with a Web browser and Internet connectivity. They must discover how to become digitally literate, digitally creative, collaborative, and effective cybercitizens.

[edit] My Global Life project

The first project to be produced and managed by the World Wide Workshop Foundation's GLOBALORIA Program is My Global Life, a worldwide network of educational, programmable websites and related wikis. The goal of MyGLife.org is to help the world’s youth experience and master technology tools and methods necessary in a world of expanding democracy and globalization. Using an open architecture of websites and wikis that customized tutorials, simulations and virtual fieldtrips, site users are guided to learn current Internet technology skills (including wiki and blog development, graphic design, and Flash programming skills). With these new skills, participants are readied to become active online stakeholders who are able to build their own socially conscious simulations to raise awareness about socially relevant issues, and to engage in positive virtual communications within their own and other communities.

The MyGLife.org network intent is to provide a replicable and scalable 'starter-kit' plus a model for empowering youth online. Cisco Systems provided the seed funding for MyGLife.org and a pilot program in Israel. Other organizations and foundations are planning to join forces in 2006-07.

[edit] The World Wide Workshop Foundation

The World Wide Workshop Foundation for Children's Media Technology & Learning is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that collaborates with leaders and educators worldwide in order to incorporate new technologies into their curriculum - in and out of schools. Much of the Foundation's work looks at strategic and innovative ways to create new online educational applications (or overhaul existing programs) to empower youth through creative and constructive communication and cooperation.

The Founder and President of the World Wide Workshop Idit Harel Caperton is an MIT-educated PhD, a CEO in the Internet industry, and a researcher in the utilization of technology for promoting creative learning, democracy and globalization through the Constructionist learning theory (which emphasizes active learning by making).
