From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Global Initiative on Psychiatry (GIP) is an international nonprofit organization registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Its headquarters is located in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Since 2001, Global Initiative also has regional offices in Vilnius (Lithuania), in Sofia (Bulgaria) and in Tbilisi (Georgia). Global Initiative is the only organization in the world that deals with the reform and humanization of the entire field of mental health care, and is currently mostly active in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. However, the region of activity is growing in size and will soon also encompass countries in other parts of the world. In the past, the organization’s work has been awarded several prestigious prizes for its efforts, namely the Human Rights Award from the American Psychiatric Association, and the 2000 Geneva Prize for Human Rights in Psychiatry. In addition, the General Secretary was made an honorary member of the British Royal College of Psychiatrists as a result of his dedication to reform in the region.
