Talk:Glen Dettman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biographical details - I can't seem to verify anything here, and there seem to be various inconsistencies. The Independent University of Australia has no web links, and the WP entry implies that it is dubious. Did he have a BA or PhD or a medical degree or what exactly? Was he a pathologist or a microbiologist or a practitioner? AMA - where is the source for this, can't find any verifiable source for this.Gleng 12:24, 18 May 2006 (UTC) Begging to differ with JDW, I've restored the publications list - there is very little verifiable information in this article and until someone can summarise exactly what he did and showed then at least the titles of the papers tell a verifiable story.Gleng 11:44, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] International Biographical Association
Glen Dettman was apparently a Fellow of the International Biographical Association. I hardly think that this merits a mention. It is possible to purchase fellowships/memberships of this association from the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. The current going rate to be sent a plaque saying that you are one of the "Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century" is US$495. See: http:http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/downloadhansard/pdf/Council/Autumn%202004/Council%20Extract%2020%20April%202004%20from%20Book%202.pdf This is vanity press of the worst kind. - But he is in good company. The President of Gambia claims many many awards from the American Biographical Institute and the International Biographical Centre. See: http://www.statehouse.gm/cv/biography.html Maustrauser 07:39, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

- I'm on a roll. Here's a photo of an American Biographical Institute "Man of the Year" Certificate. Worth the US$195 http://dba-oracle.blogspot.com/2006/10/are-you-man-of-year.html —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Maustrauser (talk • contribs) 07:43, 13 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] ABI
There is no fee for inclusion in the publications and no requirements for purchase. ABI is not a total vanity publication. Same as the Marquis series of "Who's Who," offering some vanity features and merchandise to biographees.
Current Member of the ABI Distinguished Research Board of Advisors

- Please sign your posts. The American Biographical Institute is a vanity publisher. It approaches individuals and says "Congratulations. You are a leader in your field. To recognize this achievement you have been chosen to be included in our latest publication. For a copy of the certificate indicating you are now 'Deputy Governor of the Institute' please send us US$495." This organization sends out thousands upon thousands of these offers each year. I have received them twice. Once declaring that I was "Man of the Year for 1998." Do a Google Search on ABI and you will find vast numbers of people who claim that they are "Man of the Year." Please don't be taken in by this scam. If you don't pay your $495 you still get a little entry in their book. If you pay your money you get a big entry Their books are riddled with minor celebrities and many many nobodies (like me). It is no great shakes to be in an ABI publication. In most cases it indicates that you are gullible. The fact that someone from NASA is on the board of advisors says nothing. If you look at the American Biographical Institute article and look at the President of Gambia CV you will see how despots make use of the fakery of ABI to make them look grand. You will also know how few libraries use them in their research collections. Check out some of the external links from the ABI article for other views on the importance of the ABI. For what you are saying is definately your POV. ABI has been a satisfactory member of the Eastern North Carolina BBB since 1985, and has had no complaints filed against them in the last three years. How would you know of the size of the biographical sketches in relation to the merchandise purchased? Apparently you are totaly ignorant concerning the selection and criteria process and how many people are selected "Man of the Year," you are assuming and stating that only ONE PERSON SHOULD BE SELECTED. This is totally inaccurate and liabelous information and your own POV. 70.171.229.32 20:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

- The link you provided does not work. I am not surprised that there are no complaints against ABI. Who will complain at being told that they are a "Leader in their Field"? I was impressed when I was told I was a leader in my field. I was excited. I was not excited at being asked to pay US$495 for a rosewood framed certificate that I could purchase at Kmart for $4.95. I never claimed that there should only be one "Man of the Year". I just suggest that "Man of the Year" implies 'one'. This is a title that Time Magazine has employed for decades and they only ever appoint 'one' person. I guess my main point is that anybody who has done something in their life can get into an ABI publication. The notability guidelines for WP are tighter than for ABI. [edit] Removal of the link from Glenn Dettman's article to American Biographical Institute
I am uncertain why several editors (or is it the one editor?) continue to remove the wikilink to American Biographical Institute? It verges on censorship. The link allows readers of this article to find out what being a Lifetime Deputy Governor and Member of the Research Board of Advisors, American Biographical Institute actually means in practice. It appears that there is considerable gilding of the lily going on in this article (eg the mention of the Australian Medal of Merit and other spurious awards). Surely this man's achievements can stand on their own merit without the need for claiming dubious distinctions. The claims regarding PubMed are a little over the top too. Anyone who has their stuff published in a medical magazine (it need not be a peer reviewed journal) is cited in PubMed. I would appreciate the reinstating of the wikilink to ABI. This is your own POV 70.171.229.32 06:12, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

- No. It isn't my POV. The article states that he has a 'qualification' from the American Biographical Institute. If he has this qualification, why are you wishing to delink it? Why do you wish to hide that he has this qualification? If you delink it again, I think we had better seek some mediation. Will you agree to that? Maustrauser 07:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Australasian College of Biomedical Science
A Google Search on the Australasian College of Biomedical Science comes up with one hit. This article. A Google Serach on Australasian College of Biomedical Sciences comes up with three hits. Whilst this article refers to the College in 1969, someone must have it on their internet CV somewhere, other than Glenn Dettman. What was it? Did it ever exist? What is it called now?
