The image depicts a fight (a very visual event, and a newsworthy item in its time). Because of the event's visual nature, the image significantly increases readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding.
The screenshot is a fraction of the size of the original video. The image is compressed using low-quality JPEG settings, further reducing the quality. The resulting low-resolution image used in Wikipedia is too small for broadcast or print reproduction
The same image is heavily used in other media on the web. For example, the entire full motion video of the event can be viewed at YouTube [1], and screenshots of various parts of the video have been used in other media, such as The Australian newspaper [2]. Rival TV networks used the full resolution video in their news bulletins, (eg Network Ten, as can be seen on YouTube [3])
This is the only image of the event used in Wikipedia (minimal use). Multiple images were not necessary
The screenshot serves to promote the Walkley awards, and does not limit the copyright owners' rights to distribute the performance in any way
The image is unrepeatable. There are no free image alternatives.
