Broken Wing Theatre is the name given to theatre education at Gleneagle. The school has presented more than 190 scripted plays, most written by faculty member Richard Dixon, since it opened in 1997. In addition to the regular series of plays by acting classes, Broken Wing Theatre also features extracurricular plays twice a year, in early winter and spring. Extracurricular plays offer students in-depth training to supplement their regular acting classes. Broken Wing Theatre practices a style known as Black Box Theatre with minimal sets and basic lighting, so as to focus maximum energy on actor training rather than on the technical niceties of more lavish productions. This results in actor-focussed "bare-bones" productions that sometimes render reasonably convincing performances. The motto of Broken Wing Theatre is "Sulum Vox Must Audimini", which can be translated as either "Every Word Must be Heard", or "Each Cry Must be Heard". Vocal training and script analysis receive high priority, as the success of a play is dependent first and foremost on the clear, intelligent delivery of spoken words. The use of scripts is an unwavering feature of Broken Wing Theatre's approach to actor training: at any given point, all actors in the program are either rehearsing or performing scripted plays. The stage doesn't lie, and Broken Wing actors are repeatedly and frequently confronted with their inadequacies when facing audiences, which motivates them to strive for truthful, effective performances.
[edit] Special Programs
COAST Outdoor Education: Gleneagle is also home to a popular outdoor education program named C.O.A.S.T.(Coquitlam Outdoor Education School Term) The COAST program introduces Grade 10 students to a variety of outdoor activities, including: basic outdoor low impact camping, hiking and backpacking, ocean kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, cross country (Nordic) skiing, snow shelter building and winter camping, avalanche awareness, outdoor cooking, and map and compass navigation. COAST provide instruction in the safe and proper means of participating in each of these activities, to give students the basis for a lifetime of outdoor adventure.[1]
TALONS District Gifted Program: Gleneagle is home to the district program known as T.A.L.O.N.S.(The Academy of Learning for Outstanding Notable Students). The program focuses on enriched education using the environment and the classroom to teach. They combine ten courses into eight blocks allowing for more courses outside of the core curriculum. The program does two outdoor trips each year that are completely planned by the students, a retreat in the fall and a five day Adventure Trip in the spring. On top of that they do a In-depth Study on any topic of their choice with a mentor and a Eminent Person Project.
