[edit] History
The station was built over the period 1990-1992, for the opening of the original Joondalup Line. As the suburb of Glendalough was named after the famous monastery of Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland, the initial trains on the line announced the station as "Glenda-lock", rather than the "Glenda-loe" pronunciation that had become common amongst Australian English speakers in Perth. When the tape was re-recorded in the late 1990s, its pronunciation was brought into line with common usage.
With the introduction in October 2004 of the Transperth B-series trains (pictured), the announcement was changed to: "The next station is Glendalough. Alight at Glendalough to transfer to bus services for Scarborough." Glendalough is the only non-terminal station on any line to have an extended announcement of this type. This followed a public consultation period in late 2003 after Transperth and the State Government proposed to change the name of the station to Scarborough Beach Road Station. It was largely rejected by the community and the plan was abandoned.
[edit] Station location
Glendalough station is located almost mid-way between Glendalough and Mount Hawthorn. Bounded on both sides by the Mitchell Freeway (), there is only one access point, located on the southern side of Scarborough Beach Road () between the northbound and southbound overpasses of the Mitchell Freeway.[1] From this point, two escalators with a stairway in the middle bring passengers to and from the platform.[1]
[edit] Platforms
Two services of the Joondalup Line currently serve Glendalough station: all stations and W. C-pattern express trains do not stop at Glendalough. All stations trains run locally from Perth to Clarkson whilst W-pattern trains run local to Whitfords, skipping Greenwood station.[2] Perth-bound trains operate every 10 minutes at all times; the same schedule applies to trains bound for Clarkson.[2]
