This article has been nominated to be checked for its neutrality. Discussion of this nomination can be found on the talk page. (February 2008) |
Glenbard East High School opened its doors in September 1959, with a student body of 525 students and 28 staff members. The approximate enrolment for the 2006/2007 school year was 2700 students and 180 staff members.
Prior to the opening of Glenbard East in 1959, Lombard students in High School District No. 87 attended Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn. The first Superintendent to serve the district was the late Fred L. Biester, who was Superintendent from 1918 until his death in 1962. In the spring of 1962, the Board of Education appointed Dr. Dean W. Strokes as Superintendent, followed by Mr. Raymond Livingston in 1978 and in 1984 Dr. Robert C. Stevens. Dr. Ron Smith was appointed as superintendent in May 1999. Dr. Timothy Hyland was appointed superintendent in 2002. Dr. Michael Meissen will be the new Superintendent effective July 1, 2006.The district population continued to grow rapidly and in the fall of 1972, a fourth school, Glenbard South, opened in the south part of the school district in Milton Township.
The regional Office of Education, the State Board of Education, and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredit Glenbard East High School. Graduation from a high school so accredited means recognition as a high school graduate by any college in the United States.
Glenbard East has established itself as an excellent high school respected for its broad academic offerings and its varied extracurricular programs. In fact, in 2007, over 250 East students took the AP test, and over half scored passing grades. In AP US History, 34 students scored a perfect 5, which was higher than any of the Glenbard schools. Furthermore, no school in the district has a higher number of students enrolled in AP and Honors classes than Glenbard East. Glenbard East has pushed its name to the top of the list and can surely be counted as one of Illinois' top schools.

Glenbard East Theatre is an extracurricular program that produces full-length plays three times every school year. In addition, the program mounts several student-produced shows. The theatre program is run by several faculty members, notably from the Speech Arts department. Speech Arts offers classes in theatre arts as well, and the extracurricular program allows for practical application of classroom training. Glenbard East is a perennial participant in the Illinois High School Association Theatre Festival, a statewide event attended by high school theatre students and faculty, as well as faculty from colleges and universities. Students from Glenbard East Theatre program have taken productions to the Festival and several individual students have even been honored as members of the All-State production.
[edit] Music
Glenbard East's Music program, like its Theatre program, is comprised of both curricular and extracurricular activities. Unlike the Theatre program, however, the Music Department awards credit for participation in orchestra, band, and choral music. There are various levels in each of these. For example, the choral music programs include Freshmen Boys Chorus, Freshmen Girls Chorus, Advanced Boys Chorus, Advanced Girls Chorus, and Concert Choir. Many students have successfully qualified for IHSA honors at the District and All-State levels. Glenbard East's Marching Band appears in the local Lilac Parade each year, and the Symphonic Band stages concerts every year.
