[edit] History
Glen Rovers Hurling Club was founded in April 1916 when the local St. Nicholas' Gaelic Football Club decided to form a sister hurling club on the northside of Cork city. The club is based in a strong, tough, working-class area of the city. These factors have contributed to the unique "Spirit of the Glen" that has existed in the area since the very beginning. From its foundation the club competed at both minor and junior levels. Success came quickly to the club as county minor titles were won in 1922 and 1923, followed by a county junior title in 1924 and a county intermediate title in 1925.
Glen Rovers first joined the senior ranks of the Cork County Championship in 1926. The club contested its first county final in 1930, however, the side lost out to a star-studded Blackrock team. However, a careful nurturing of the under-age talent that existed in the area allowed the Glen to become one of the most successful clubs of the 1930s. In 1934 the club won its very first Cork County Championship title. It was to be the first of a remarkable eight county titles in-a-row and copper-fastened their claim to be one of the greatest club hurling sides of all-time. Their luck ran out in the semi-final in 1942, when Ballincollig ended their chance of winning a ninth consecutive title. While experts were of the opinion that the Glen would be down for sometime after such a successful run the club bounced back again to add another five county titles in 1944, 1945, 1948, 1949 and 1950.
The retirement of Jack Lynch in 1950 brought an end to the last link with the great team of 1934-1941, however, as one star retired a new one, Christy Ring, helped the Glen to another five county titles in 1953, 1954, 1958, 1959 and 1960. The new decade saw the club add to its tally of county titles by winning in 1962. In 1964 the Glen won its twentieth county title as well as becoming the first team to win the newly-created Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship. Two further county titles were claimed by the club in 1967 and 1969. The Glen won another county title in 1972. This was once again converted into a Munster club title as well as an All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1973. In 1976-1977 the Glen captured another trio of county, Munster and All-Ireland titles. The club went into decline after these great wins and it took until 1989 for the Glen to regain the county title.
