[edit] After MBM
why were the ashes from the power plant used as fertalizer before, but not now? --Sum Dum Gai
- Probably because of BSE fears. BSE is caused by misfolded proteins so it might be possible for some scraps of the misfolded protein to survive in the ashes. If another cow ingests the misfolded protein, it in turn contracts BSE. Looking at Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, it would seem that these misfolded proteins can be resistant to high temperatures.--24.214.26.159 20:18, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- It has to be said that that the MBM burned in the power station is not coming from officially infected BSE cows but from those sacrified because Over Thirty Months Scheme (OTMS), whereby cattle over the age of thirty months were removed from the food chain and totally destroyed. - It is indeed that. While the combustion temperature is more than adequate, the amount of time a given particle spends in a furnace designed for power generation is much shorter than that which is usually used for sterilization. --Adamrush 10:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. Do you reckon we should remove Category:Incinerators as this is not the main function? E Asterion u talking to me? 13:46, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- This power station is most definitely an incinerator (many are used for power generation in Sweden, for example), just not an incinerator which is confidently assumed to sterilize everything it's fed. --Adamrush 06:00, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- That's great. Thanks for the reassurance, not sure if I got that right at first. E Asterion u talking to me? 21:11, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
