This is a plant of the family Myrsinaceae (formerly Primulaceae). It grows in coastal habitats, in both wet ground and water, and is a native to Europe and North America. This plant differs from all other genera of the former Primulaceae in having apetalous flowers with a pink, petaloid calyx. It is generally pentamerous both in the calyx and the seed capsule.
