Location of Metro station

Glacière is a station of the Paris Métro, named after the Rue de la Glacière.

[edit] History

In this district, the Bièvre River, which flows into the Seine, formed many lakes and ponds where herds of animals once drank. More recently, these basins provided large amounts of ice which were used for preserving in the summer in wells built for the purpose before the invention of the electric refrigerator. The name, Glacière, is the only reminder of the old iceworks.

[edit] Places of interest

Victor Hugo located an episode of Les Misérables in the nearby Rue du Champ de l'Alouette, where there used to be tanneries.
