Not long after recording Simpatico with her friend and mentor, Chet Atkins, Bogguss took a hiatus to start a family. Sixteen months after the birth of her son, she was back with her sixth solo album on Liberty entitled Give Me Some Wheels. During her absence, however, the climate of country music had changed considerably. Overshadowed by the aggressively promoted, pop-friendly offerings from a new crop of sexed-up female singers that included Martina McBride, Faith Hill, and Shania Twain, Bogguss's more traditional style failed to connect with younger listeners.

For the album's title track and lead-off single, Bogguss reunited with Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison, the co-writers of one of her most successful singles, "Hey Cinderella". However, lacking any real support from her label, "Give Me Some Wheels" barely scraped the bottom of the country charts. Her follow-up single, the blues-tinged "No Way Out" (later recorded by Julie Roberts on her self-titled debut album, fared marginally better.
