His Excellency Giuseppe Bertello (1 October 1942-) is a Catholic archbishop and currently Nuncio to Italy.
[edit] Early life
Bertello was ordained a priest on 29 June 1966 by Bishop Albino Mensa and obtained a licence in pastoral theology and later a doctorate in canon law. He went on to attend the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy where he studied diplomacy.
[edit] Diplomatic service
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1971 in the service in the Apostolic Nunciatures of Sudan, Turkey, Venezuela and the Permanent Mission of the Holy See at the United Nations Office in Geneva.
On 17 October 1987 Pope John Paul II named him titular archbishop of Urbs Salvia. He was consecrated on 28 November by Agostino Cardinal Casaroli, Mgr. Albino Mensa and Luigi Bettazzi. He was then appointed as Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Togo and Benin. He remained as Nuncio to these countries until 12 January 1991 when the pontiff appointed him to Rwanda, in 1994, during the most dramatic phase of the war between the Hutus and Tutsis. In these times he did all he could to encourage evry possible effort for peace.
In March 1995 John Paul II appointed him to the United Nations in Geneva. He held the post of Permanent Observer of Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva from 1997, with the same role, at the World Trade Organization.
On the 27 December 2000 the Pope, entrusted him with another task, that of apostolic nuncio in Mexico happening so Monsignor Leonardo Sandri could take up his appointment in the Roman Curia at the Secretariat of State. In Mexico, 30 July 2002, is to receive him as nuncio the Pope arrived on an apostolic visit in the country for the canonisation of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin.
Archbishop Bertello has held since 2007 the post of apostolic nuncio to Italy and the Republic of San Marino.
