I'm concerned about this sentence: "In 1938, she was in attendance at the first U.S. Women's Chess Championship tournament, organized by Caroline Marshall and held at the Rockefeller Center in New York City (won by Adele Rivero)."
I know it originates from an article by John McCrary at http://www.excaliburelectronics.com/history1198.html but I'm not sure that the facts are accurate. It's my understanding that the "first U.S.Women's Chess Championship tournament," while directed by Carrie Marshall, took place in 1937 at the Marshall Chess Club with the following results:
Mrs. Adele Rivero 8½-½
Mrs. Mary Bain 7-1
Mrs. R. McCready 5-4
Mrs. Kathryn Slater 5-4
Miss Adele Raettig 4½-4½
Miss Helen White 4-5
Mrs. Wm. Davey 3- 6
Mrs. EIlie Rogosin 3-6
Miss Edith Weart 2-6
Miss Elizabeth Wray 2-7
This is too important to trust to someone's glib and unsupported statements and should be researched better.
