Hazumu Osaragi is pressured by his friends Tomari Kurusu and Asuta Soro to confess his love to his friend Yasuna Kamiizumi, but she tearfully rejects him. Hazumu climbs the nearby Mt. Kashima to forget what happened by surrounding himself with plants and flowers due to having an affinity in floriculture. An alien spacecraft fatally wounds him while on the mountain, and as an apology, the alien brings Hazumu back to life, but accidentally switches his gender before returning Hazumu to Earth. The alien broadcasts this event over the entire planet which makes Hazumu rather famous. Reporters constantly attempt to interview Hazumu about the incident, which bothers her and Tomari, who has to shield Hazumu from their advances. Hazumu learns how to adjust to life as a girl, but is confused when Yasuna suddenly professes her love to Hazumu. The alien that brought Hazumu back to life, Hitoshi Sora, along with the artificial intelligence of his spaceship contained inside an artificial body named Jan Pu, come to live in Hazumu's house and are warmly welcomed by her parents. Hitoshi even starts working at Hazumu's school as a biology teacher in order to further observe humans. Through helpful hints by Hitoshi, Hazumu discovers Yasuna's unique affliction to not be able to see males clearly, but instead as hazy outlines. Hazumu asks Yasuna about this, and Yasuna tells her everything. Yasuna leaves quickly after explaining, but returns to share a kiss with Hazumu. Tomari is shocked when she walks in on them as they are kissing.

Tomari tries to avoid Hazumu for several days after having caught her and Yasuna kissing. Hazumu does not understand why Tomari is acting this way, but attempts to apologize to her. In the process, she recalls a promise she made with Tomari as children to one day become Tomari's bride. This causes Tomari to reconcile with Hazumu and their friendship goes back to normal. Hazumu and her friends decide to go to the beach one summer day. While there, Asuta has to deal with newfound feelings of attraction towards Hazumu, and Tomari informs Yasuna that she is also in love with Hazumu. At school, Hitoshi suggests that Hazumu's class goes through a test of courage, though Hazumu is deathly afraid during the event. After running away in fright, she meets Ayuki Mari in the biology room where she learns that Ayuki does indeed like someone, but is content just watching that person and not going any further than that. Yasuna invites Hazumu and her friends over for a curry party after Hazumu harvests some vegetables from the school's garden, but Yasuna makes it much too hot for everyone's tastes except for Yasuna herself. Hazumu and her friends have fun attending the annual summer festival, and during this time Hazumu realizes how difficult it is going to be to have to choose between Yasuna and Tomari for her affections. When school is just ending for summer vacation, Yasuna receives a flier for an aquarium amusement park and suggests to her friends to come too, but it ends up with only Hazumu and Yasuna going together. The next day, Hazumu goes to see Tomari at her training camp, and Tomari tells Hazumu that she is not going to lose to Yasuna for Hazumu's affections.

Hazumu and Tomari are having fun at the park until Hitoshi appears to inform Hazumu that Yasuna has collapsed; Hazumu and Tomari rush back to school to make sure she is okay. Yasuna is thankful both of them came to see her. Close to the end of summer vacation, Hazumu and her friends light fireworks near the river, and during this time Yasuna and Tomari grow closer together as friends. When the new semester at school begins, Hazumu notices that Yasuna and Tomari are avoiding her, and Hazumu finds them together shopping for clothes in town. Hazumu becomes worried that she is not exactly a "real" girl, but later finds that her friends were actually planning a birthday party for her, since today is her birthday. Hazumu is relieved to discover that no one cares that she is not a boy anymore. As Hazumu and Yasuna stand in the rain together, Hazumu sneezes which causes Yasuna to rush Hazumu into her home so that she can take a bath lest Hazumu catch a cold. Yasuna gives Hazumu some of her clothes to wear, and Hazumu meets Tomari, Ayuki, and Asuta on the way home. Hazumu tries to explain what happened, but Tomari jumps to conclusions, thinking that Hazumu took a bath with Yasuna. Hazumu asks Hitoshi to tell her exactly when she is going to die, but it takes a couple of days to analyze the data. The day before the annual culture festival, both Yasuna and Tomari separately tell Hazumu that they love her, though Hazumu is later seen that night crying alone on the school roof. During the first day of the culture festival, Hitoshi goes around school giving an internal report about the characters and what he thinks of them through his constant observations. At the end of the day, Hitoshi tells Hazumu that she will die on midnight after the conclusion of the culture festival. That day, Hazumu tries to meet up with Yasuna and Tomari, but keeps missing them. She coincidentally meets with Asuta who informs her after a confrontation that he and the rest of Hazumu's friends had been told Hazumu is going to die. At the same time, Jan Pu arrives at school and tells Yasuna, Tomari, and Ayuki that Hazumu will die tonight, causing both Yasuna and Tomari to search for her. The two later meet at the stairway to the school roof and go up to find Hazumu. At this time, Hitoshi realizes that his earlier analysis was wrong and discovers that Hazumu will die in mere moments. While leaning on the fence on the school roof, it breaks behind Hazumu, causing her to fall off. Both Yasuna and Tomari rush towards Hazumu, but only Tomari jumps from the roof in an effort to save her. When they later wake up in the infirmary, Hazumu confesses her love to Tomari, effectively choosing her over Yasuna. A month later, Hazumu and her friends listen to Yasuna as she plays with the rest of the school's wind ensemble. Later that night, Hazumu and her friends go to Namiko's birthday party which doubles as a Christmas party since Namiko's birthday is on Christmas. |
