Girls' Life (magazine)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girls' Life is an American teen magazine. It was launched in September 1994 by Monarch Services.

Issues of Girls' Life contain information and advice on topics such as academic success, peer pressure, time management tips, stress-relieving ideas and self-esteem. Girls' Life's website hosts a penpal program, games, and discussions. It is considered safe for younger girls, around age 10. The covers feature some of the Disney stars, such as Miley Cyrus and the Cheetah Girls, but other stars, that may bring interest to older girls, such as Mandy Moore or Hayden Panettiere. Emma Roberts, Miley Cyrus, Emma Watson, The Cheetah Girls and Ashley Tisdale have twice adorned the cover of Girls' Life Magazine also.

It covers information on puberty, fashion, beauty, skin care, embarrassing moments, and of course, boys. There are also recipes, gift ideas, and interviews.

The magazine was once notable for the fact it did not feature celebrities on the cover, but eventually began featuring celebrity covers, the first being Alexis Bledel of 'Gilmore Girls'. The editor said this was because "celebrities sell more magazines". Other features include:

  • We've Got Mail! (Letters from readers)

  • Short Stuff (little mini articles)
  • Dear Carol
  • New Fashion Trend
  • New Beauty Trend

The Girls' Life Website is of high quality in terms of safety, interest to its audience, and online blogs. It shares several features with the magazine such as Dear Carol, an advice column, and often gives extended interviews with the celebrities featured in print. G-blog, created by Wordpress is moderated once every hour generally, and allows for interaction with the magazine staff and near-instant advice. The moderators also check entries to ensure appropriateness. Within G-blog, there are blogs on magazine features, popular Tv shows such as American Idol, books, tough situations sent in by girls, and embarrassing moments. Bloggers do not need to subscribe to the magazine, and there is registeration involved, to insure that no other girl steals their screen name. A password is also required. A high level of safety is ensured by censoring last names, curse words, and any personal information beyond home state. The blog uses a wide variety of cute icons conveying jealousy, sadness, and laughing out loud, although there are no avatars available. Many of its users check back several times a week and have stayed with the blog since their first time on.
