Giovanni Portilho Vescovi (born June 14, 1978) is an Brazilian chess player. He is currently the highest rated Brazilian and has won the national championship five times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007). He was awarded the title of International Master in 1993 and the Grandmaster title in 1998. In 1998 he played on the first board in the first World Junior Team Chess Championship (for Under-20) in Rio de Janeiro[1]. He won the gold medal winning with a score of 5.5/6. In 2001 we won the South American Chess Championship (FIDE 2.4 Zonal)[2]. He won the Bermuda tournament three times, in 2002[3], 2003[4] and 2004.[5] He won the international tournament in Sao Paulo in 2005[6] and 2006 [7].

He participated in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2002 knockout tournament, and was knocked out in the second round against Veselin Topalov.[8] He took part in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2004, but was eliminated in the first round by Gadir Guseinov.[9] In the Chess World Cup 2005, where he was eliminated in the second round by Pentala Harikrishna.[10]
