Giovanni Martinelli (painter)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Martinelli (1600 or 1604 - January 1, 1659) was an Italian painter of the Baroque era painter active mainly in Florence.

He was born in Montevarchi, Arezzo; but by 1621-23, moves to Florence and begins training with Jacopo Ligozzi. He appears to have traveled over the next decades, but returned to Florence in 1636 to enroll in the Accademia del Disegno, and became a member in 1637.

He painted a Miracle of the Mule (1632) for the church of San Francesco in Pescia; it adheres to the model of Lodovico Cigoli’s painting of the same subject. He shows a variety of eclectic influences. By 1638, he had frescoed four Allegories for the Certosa del Galluzzo, near Florence
