Gilwern

Gilwern is a village in South East Wales. The name is translated from English as "the nook near the alder-grove".

It is situated within the Llanelly parish ward of Monmouthshire County Council, 4 miles (6.4 km) from the market town of Abergavenny.

Gilwern stands on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The local area has a history of iron production. The Monmouthshire and Brecon canal, which flows through Gilwern, was built to transport coal and coke to service the Clydach ironworks.
