Gilman is located at 41°52′47″N, 92°47′20″W (41.879750, -92.788786).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.4 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 600 people, 248 households, and 162 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,099.0 people per square mile (421.2/km²). There were 259 housing units at an average density of 474.4/sq mi (181.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.50% White, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 248 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,523, and the median income for a family was $42,500. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $20,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,070. About 9.9% of families and 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.
